I'm capable of recognizing influence. The Beatles, no matter what we think, are more popular than Jesus and wrote music that had notes and involved no autotuners. I don't care if they weren't that remarkable in any technical sense, it's the gates they opened that matter.

I guess no reason is invalid when it comes to enjoying art.

Influence of one influences another, which creates a wave of influence, which leads to innovation by the influenced, so on and so forth until hipsters. Shit's like evolution.

Fuck. Why did it have to lead to hipsters?

That's more complicated. I blame in part Apple.

And based on this the Beatles ARE the greatest band of all time. I'm not really a fan, I enjoy a few songs at most, but disregarding what they did because people are on their knobs all the times is stupid.

The Beatles were the first rock band to break away from the standard 1,4,5,1 chord progression that defined rock music in the late 50s-early 60s. That was a major turning-point in modern music.

I'm still not that big a fan, but McCartney pretty much single-handedly reinvented popular music.

Coming into this thread late but:

regarding the Beatles and Nirvana as one of the greatest bands ever, yes they made great music, yes they are well known for it, but i just don't think they're worth the praise they get.

I am old enough to remember Smells Like Teen Spirit blowing up. I am also old enough to remember how shitty music was before them, and how many good bands got playtime because of their success. Tuhl's right, it's all about bringing about a massive shift. Elvis did it, the Beatles did it, Nirvana did it. With the plethora of music available and the ease of getting it, I don't think we'll see that kinda of change again. Bands will be big, but they won't change the industry like that.

The Beatles were pretty remarkable technically for a rock band, and highly remarkable for their range. The only type of music they were never any good at was blues (but even that, their early pop-rock music is heavily blues influenced).

George was a great guitarist, Ringo was a human metronome (he would always keep the exact same tempo and beat between takes without any help), and John and Paul were amazing songwriters.

Basically, I think Cziki is taking for granted the musical world created by the Beatles in judging them. The things they did were simply not done before them.

It's like people who don't get why Jimi Hendrix was a great guitarist without realizing that he was literally part of a musical movement that was not just exploring new musical directions with the guitar, but pushing the very technology of electric guitars to be improved and innovated.

And also this. Nirvana was like a musical colonic to the industry.

Even I know it exists. That should make you feel very ashamed.

This.

Obviously you don't have to enjoy their music, since music is so subjective anyway. There have been threads where people are talking about metal and such...it's not a genre I particularly enjoy listening to, but I can still respect it. Likewise with the Beatles, you don't need to love them...but if you let your dislike for them cloud your judgment on their influence then you are being a dolt.

Be fair, you have sex like 30 times a month and you know what fingerbanging is. Cziiki's like 15.
