I think they have to get the temperature down and the reactions stopped before they can start pouring the tons of concrete it's going to take to encase that beast.

Any idea what they're using for control rods? Chernobyl was a piece of shit because they were using carbon/graphite. If I remember right, the military uses hafnium, but there's an issue about using it near zirconium, which is used as shielding or something.

Jubber

No idea, if you know someone with nuclear reactor exact specs, lemme know haha.

Edit- 22:30 UTC - IAEA:

IAEA wrote:
Japanese authorities have informed the IAEA that the evacuation of the population from the 20-kilometre zone around Fukushima Daiichi has been successfully completed.
The Japanese authorities have also advised that people within a 30-km radius to take cover indoors. Iodine tablets have been distributed to evacuation centres but no decision has yet been taken on their administration.

Note: That's a different fault line, and when Japan gets hit this hard, Fuji is usually soon to follow. And people thought Eyjafjallajökull's ash was annoying.

Quote:
Update 3/15/11, 9:42A.M. The backlog is just too great - don't place any more orders for Geiger Counters unless it is the Detector or Prospector models below. Thanks.

Order Update: Dateline 3/15/11 Due to the disaster in Japan, orders for Geiger Counters have out-stripped supply. Initial orders were filled immediately from stock on the shelves at our location and the warehouses of our suppliers. But at this point, there are simply not enough detectors available to meet the overwhelming demand. At least one of our suppliers has adopted a "triage" method of doling out the limited supply of detectors remaining until more can come off the factory line. So you can continue to place orders to get in the "queue", but at this point, it could be weeks before your order is filled. Our policy is not to process any credit card if and until your order ships, and you can cancel your order at any time up until then. Please be patient during this period. We will generally not be able to respond to individual queries, including emails.

As it stands, we are sold out of all Pocket models, but still have plenty of Radiation Network Software. We also have a reasonable lead time on some of the larger, traditional Probe Geiger Counters. We are sorry for the delay, and will appreciate your patience. Thank you.

That didn't take long.

LOLWUT?

Most people wouldn't know how to properly test for air-borne exposure. When I was in the Navy, we used a device that sucked air through a filter that would trap particles, and after running the device for a specified period, then you would test the filter using the Geiger Counter. Apparently that gave a better reading. If you're waving the wand around and it starts giving readings, you're fuckerized anyway, might as well eat your bullet.

While I like your current location (as listed next to your picture), what this is telling you is that you and Iggy need to move to Virginia so you can hang out with Eternal (even if he's a racist) and me.

apparently things are so desperate they're bringing a riot control water cannon from the police.

i'm assuming to spray on the rods, not the people fleeing.

IAEA wrote:
Japanese authorities have reported concerns about the condition of the spent nuclear fuel pool at Fukushima Daiichi Unit 3 and Unit 4. Japanese Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa announced Wednesday that Special Defence Forces helicopters planned to drop water onto Unit 3, and officials are also preparing to spray water into Unit 4 from ground positions, and possibly later into Unit 3. Some debris on the ground from the 14 March explosion at Unit 3 may need to be removed before the spraying can begin.

I certainly wouldn't want to buy into any sensationalism, as if you could get much more sensational than a possibility (however small) of multiple nuclear reactor meltdowns on an island with 125M and the world's third largest economy, but I'd like your opinions on this: Do you see the actions being taken overall by various governments as being consistent with the general "we got this" slant of the information being released concerning these reactors?

From what I'm seeing, and I'm absolutely no expert, they don't seem anywhere close to "we got this"... more like, "OMG WE'RE JUST BUYING TIME!!"

This next part is not a prediction, just a "what if". I realize a lot of you put faith in the containment structures built into these facilities, and you're probably right, but these facilities were also built to stay cool and with backup cooling systems that wouldn't fail, right? It isn't batshit crazy to think that one or more of these containment buildings could also fail to work as intended. So, what if...

What if this thing went all Chernobyl (or close), and suddenly half of Japan (or more) became uninhabitable? Do any of you find the idea of this frightening? Imagine the possible global impacts of the massive shifts/impacts in economics, population, environment, world power, etc.
