I don't play shit games. In fact... I don't think anyone does? Dumb comment is dumb.

WoW may have gotten worse over the years, but it's far from a shit game. And I hate all other MMO's from the get-go because I refuse to play more than one at a time but more importantly I refuse to get sucked into another.

So what you're saying is you're not open minded to other games.

why even post in this thread?

This thread isn't even about Rift, its about what they're attempting to do to stop the china farmers and account hackers.

As long as it's not difficult to fix I think it's a decent idea. Especially if it's intelligent enough to recognize if you repeatedly play from a couple of IPs and greenlights all of them (so if you play from two places, it won't lock down each time you do).

I'm sure china farmers and hackers care about their server ping when laundering mats and botting.

edit: Is it even possible for a proxy/tunnel to mirror any given IP? If the system works as advertised - "radically different" - then use of a proxy wouldn't resolve that the IP would still be different than usual.

You can tie in a latency monitor to the software to determine latency from the client to the server (as you already have in WoW), and then set the server to attempt pinging the client. As the client is originating in "questionable" land but routed through an endpoint that is not "drastically different", there would be a difference in those times. It's not difficult to set up a system for that.

As far as proxy/tunneling, you would generally be creating a tunnel from your questionable location to your home IP. Of course, that has to be set up before any gaming session in your other location. If you're using open proxies or tunneling, 1) it's horribly slow, and 2) you have a drastically different ip anyway.

Simply put, if you show up with a NYC residential ISP subnet, then show up with a Boston residential ISP subnet an hour later, you're flagged. [/quote]

...

You didn't answer my question.

I didn't ask if legitimate players could create their own proxies to access the game remotely without whitelisting a new IP.
I asked if it were possible for hackers to use proxies to emulate legitimate IPs (i.e., that of the victim).

Odd way to phrase that then.

To do so, you would have to know the whitelisted ip blocks, and yes, you can spoof someone else's ip, but you wouldn't get the reply.

Your game would think it's sending packets to la la land, never hear back, and then drop you. That's how an ACK flood works, actually.

So, what you're saying is, Meowth is wrong, and proxies and such won't prove effective against Rift's sytem?

Unless you can find a "proxy" (he means a tunnel, or something like a VPN) in the subnet of your victim, you cannot "proxy" your way to lolz.

If you knew the IP in question and you were able to hack their router you could route the traffic to yourself and your traffic through their router however that's beyond the ability of most "hackers" because contrary to what hollywood would have you believe, executing a man in the middle attack isn't easy even with proper tools.

It's still an additional layer, as you can't just route all your traffic to some residential ip on comcast and expect to get past your own router.

Oh I'm aware, I'm just saying the way you could do it is with a man in the middle attack, which requires way more effort than anyone would get involved in for something as trivial as a game account.

So, to answer Usd's question, this system should work.

In theory.

Yeah, but I'm assuming radically different doesn't refer to just the region, maybe if it's different from the ipblock allocated to your primary isp. It'd be a bit of a pain for those traveling or say playing from the office, but such is life.

Now it all depends on whether or not the money they make from selling game money is worth the expense it would take to be beating the system
