People got tired of having presidents that serve for life and the internet let them know what the standard of living was like in other countries.

This is why embargoes are self defeating as a means of political action.

In the sense that Cuba got along fine despite not trading with us? That's mostly true, but they were trading with everyone else. I'd say Iran would be happier if they had more people to sell to and buy shit from.

A better example would be North Korea, or the Soviet bloc. Go watch "Goodbye Lenin".

One of the long-term effects of the embargo is that Iran is one of the most heavily industrialized and self-reliant nations in the Middle East.

People are tired of living in shit because of assholes.

"Ok we aren't such things and birds are pretty advanced. They fly and shit from anywhere they want. While we sit on our automatic toilets, they're shitting on people and my car while a cool breeze tickles their anus. That's the life."

North Korea produces less food than its population eats. I don't think perpetual starvation is a sign that embargoes are harmless.

That, and if you think Cuba is doing even close to OK, you've watched too many Michael Moore movies.

You can't say that America has to be involved in the world at large or it will crumble and other smaller shittier countries are doing just fine without us in the same breath.

My point is that the embargo hasn't changed the government.

America has to be involved in the world to maintain our level of decadent consumption. I'm not saying that's good or bad, just the way it is.

Well, the motivations are similar across in each of the countries but there are some differences as well.

Bahrain, for example, is sick of having it's Shiite majority ruled by the Sunni monarchy. They give all the high paying jobs and political power to Sunnis and ignore most of the Shiites. That's why Saudi Arabia had to step in, they wanted to maintain the Sunni power (they are a Sunni majority.
