Well #2 is true, but not necessarily related. It is highly suspicious given the guy's background, though he has apparently done something similar once in the past.

It won't really matter because he'll get off, as he is rich, white, and foreign. If anything, it's hard to see a conspiracy here, because if it were, all this would do is piss him off more.
