I dunno man. I mean it absolutely looks like the kid was disabled, but you can't prove that beyond a shadow of a doubt. Therein lies the legal bullshit that might have gotten him off.
It's beyond a reasonable doubt, a small difference but important. You also can't really argue self-defense when you leave the premises and come back. His first shot was certainly SD, but pumping more rounds into a prone body after walking around for a while is most certainly not.
I don't think this has anything to do with race per se. The people defending him see it more as 'upstanding citizen' v. criminal. Certainly the fact that he was black make it easier to support the white man, and easier for his supporters to write this off as just another no good black trouble-maker, however I think they would be making a stink about it either way.

Plus I'm glad he shot the robber and wish he'd shot the other one too. Is that weird?
I'm happy seeing robbers get shot, I feel that if you run into a store and threaten people with a gun you get what's coming to you. I also think there's a line to be drawn. The kid was already shot and was down. I wouldn't be surprised if the kid was moving when he was shot 5 more times, but he was probably writhing around on the floor, and wasn't a threat. The pharmacist wasn't protecting himself when he shot that kid, he was committing murder.
