If you are not overeating then the lunch sucks.

Following your analogy, the lunch MUST suck. The business model is predicated on people paying for the additional content. If people aren't doing that then clearly the product isn't working as intended.

You could argue that either you're willing to let other people be more stupid or more hardcore than you, but the game will always be balanced around compelling those people who are stupid, impulsive, or hardcore to spend cash. That is why I say MT/modular games will always suck.
