CCP Zulu trolled EVE's playerbase so hard

Quote:
People have been shocked by the price range in the NeX store, but you should remember that we are talking about clothes. Look at the clothes you are currently wearing in real life. Do you have any specific brands? Did you choose it because it was better quality than a no-name brand? Assume for a short while that you are wearing a pair of $1,000 jeans from some exclusive Japanese boutique shop. Why would you want to wear a pair of $1,000 jeans when you can get perfectly similar jeans for under $50? What do other people think about you when they see you wearing them? For some you will look like the sad culmination of vainness while others will admire you and think you are the coolest thing since sliced bread. Whichever it is, it is clear that by wearing clothes you are expressing yourself and that the price is one of the many dimensions that clothes possess to do that in addition to style and fit. You don't need to buy expensive clothes. In fact you don't need to buy any clothes. Whatever you choose to do reflects what you are and what you want others to think you are.

In response to 60$+ items in their cashshop

The rest of the blog is hilarious too

Microtransactions are incredibly lame and a way of juicing customers while delivering less content.

Players that don't buy the MT garbage have less of a stake in the game's development, because MT games will always have a financial incentive for the developer to not address outstanding issues or content deficiency (example: how Blizzard tries to profit off realm imbalances rather than correcting them through realm mergers and free realm transfers, which is what they and other providers did before MTs were introduced, or how they add the Winged Steed to bring revenues back up from sub losses rather than making more and better new content). MT games will always be cost-justified on the the atomic level and not the global level, resulting in a poor quality game that is not more than the sum of its parts.

So the argument that MTs are benign to anyone who doesn't spend cash is totally specious.

MTs are dishonest when implemented into games like EvE and WoW that are sub-based and owe their success to the fact they launched explicitly precluding MTs.

That said, his blog sounds much more honest and convincing than Blizzard blogs and dev talks that read like they were written by a bot.

Why does EvE even have micotransactions? It's a fucking sub-based game and they launch new expansions like every 6 months. I believe most of those are free, too.

I mean, what could people be buying with real money that they can't get with their billions of ISK?

Your question is its own answer.

45 dollars for an ingame shirt is hardly a micro-transaction. People are also outraged that CCP refuses to deny that they will not add Pay-to-Win items to the shop.

It's turning into a hilarious trainwrek.

The arrogance coming from the staff rivals that of the WoW dev team.

Naturally, we have caught the attention of the world. Only a few weeks ago we revealed more information about DUST 514 and now we have done it again by committing to our core purpose as a company by redefining assumptions. After 40 hours we have already sold 52 monocles, generating more revenue than any of the other items in the store.

(also check out the new gw2 demo in the @gw2 thread, it's pretty sexy!)

Never played this game but judging by the smug writer of that blog I'm sure as hell glad.

the game itself is fine and always has been. it's definitely slow as shit but it's a great hobby (i say that instead of game).

as for these microtransactions im lollin. i can't really tell if they're going to turn it into pay to win. it doesn't really seem like them, what with their game being known for people ripping each other completely off and robbing each other blind. it's never really been an "LOL IM DA BEST" type of game. the only people who ever had anything remotely worth showing off were people in Titans, which are fucking gigantic ships that take everything and more to get, and even then the people who have them don't have them because HURR DURR IM SO GUD @ GRINDIN. it's a guild effort.

i do like his comments about the jeans though. he's basically saying "if you want to be a retard, we sure won't stop you"

I'll take microtransactions over first day DLCs any day of the week.

EvE isn't a game. A game should be fun, something sorely lacking in EvE. That said, it's basically a perfect MMO that lets you do almost anything to anyone anywhere. It's just, you know, lacking the "game" part. Menu-based commands just aren't appealing, and a game in space with no twitch factor just sucks the fun out of life.
