You're aware that the lottery is essentially a tax specifically aimed at the poor...right? Because poor people make up the overwhelming majority of lottery ticket buyers.

Food is a tax specifically aimed at people, because people make up the overwhelming majority of food buyers.

Dumb statement, mirite? Also, lottery has the chance for a sizable payout for the person who purchases a lotter ticket. Taxes don't work the same way because there isn't much of a chance for any payout... especially if you're not piss poor or old.

No. Why would they?

Are there drugs emanating from those I don't know about?

Sneaky hippies.

Right. Except the quality of the water out of your tap. Or the safety of your car, or of the safety of the food you eat, or the roads you drive on, or your protection from foreign invaders, or one of the literally thousands of things you interact with daily.

Aside from all those things taxes are a complete racket.

Pay attention to key words.

Also:

http://mises.org/daily/249

Quote:
The lottery tax is regressive. It takes a higher percentage of a poor man’s wages than a rich man's. Every study has shown this to be the case and there has not been one published study that contradicts this finding. But that is not all: the lottery is also played more often by poor people and is therefore a highly regressive tax. Rich people can gamble at much better odds in Las Vegas or over the Internet where the payback is 90% rather than the state lottery’s 50%.

http://www.chicagoreporter.com/index.ph ... _Play_More

Quote:
Predominantly African American or Latino, low-income Chicago communities have generated the highest lottery sales in the state, shows an analysis of Illinois Lottery records since 1997 by The Chicago Reporter. In addition, residents in these communities spent a higher portion of their incomes on the lottery than people in more affluent areas. And despite the state’s recent economic downturn, lottery spending has increased, the Reporter found.

http://www.carolinajournal.com/articles ... ml?id=3973 - Headline "Poor Counties Play Lottery More"

Quote:
“Opponents of the lottery warned that it would be a tax on poor people, but it’s actually turned out worse — it is a tax on poor, unemployed people in eastern North Carolina who already pay high taxes.”

Quote:
State Commerce Department figures also pointed to a link between economically distressed counties and strong lottery ticket sales, Coletti said.

“The Commerce Department groups counties by their economic performance,” he said. “The most economically distressed counties in Tiers One through Three sold $126 of lottery tickets per adult. Tier Four counties with stronger economies sold $121 in tickets for each adult. Tier Five counties with the healthiest economies had sales of $110 per adult.”

You're trying to get Eturnal to care about poor people. Hasn't he already proven that he doesn't give two shits about his fellow man?

Really though, the lottery needs to stay. People make a choice to play, they know they don't stand a chance at winning but they do it anyway. I worked in a store that sold lottery tickets and no one coming in there thought they were making a smart investment. This is a clear case of personal responsibility.

Should we outlaw alcohol and tobacco because the poor are taxed at a disproportionate level with them as well?

Yea, I don't give a shit about other people yet I probably donate more of my income and time to charity than most people here.

If the poor want to spend their money on lottery tickets then they should be allowed to without calling it a tax; it's a lottery ticket, not a tax... not even 'essentially' a tax, because people have no choice about paying taxes but they do have a choice about buying a lottery ticket.

I agree.

Just because people are fucking retarded and choose to spend money on the lottery doesn't mean anything other than they're fucking retarded.

Buying 2 lottery tickets doubles my odds of winning.

Whenever I think of Eturnal I think of the two biggest conservatives I know irl.

One of them is getting his entire tuition paid and is getting something like $5 million dollars when he graduates because the government gave his grandfather a boatload of money since they found uranium on his property back in the 50's and they're still raking in interest.

The second one went to school to be a firefighter, can't find a job due to the economy, and is now being tailored by his father to run the family company.

Both of them are entirely against welfare, because they've never been given handouts, ever.

what assholes.

They actually are assholes considering that they've been literally handed everything in life and they hate welfare because it gives money to people, because they totally aren't leeching off of someone else's success.

EDIT: They also want to, and I quote, "hang that nigger Obama".

I'm sure there was an attempt to insult somewhere in there... lemme try.

Whenever I think of Mayo I think of the two biggest liberals I know irl.

One lives in Kentucky (not far from Cincinnati) and he lost his job a couple years back. He worked at a library for a pretty long time and was the only guy working there. He eventually got fired and, in his place, they hired a woman. He tried suing the county over some sexism case but that never went anywhere. Since he was trying to sue he said he couldn't get a job otherwise he wouldn't be compensated for lost salary. When he never got a payout, he enjoyed unemployment for the full time allowed by the government; nearly two years. He said it was awesome sitting at home, playing WoW and getting paid. I talked to his wife during that period and she told me she was on the verge on leaving him because he became a lazy sloth who expected her to work a full time job (at a college), then go home to cook dinner, clean the house and mow the lawn. When he became lazy and dishonest (by milking the system for all he could get) I lost a lot of respect for him and I seldom talk to him anymore. When his unemployment ran out he found a seasonal job working at Amazon.com (over the winter) then moved on to being a line cook for a restaurant. The wife is still thinking about leaving him because he's trying to find ways to take advantage of work.

The other one looks like Cindy Sheehan. She went to college with my wife and they shared a suite together their sophomore year. She would often blame Republicans for all the problems in the world and she swears that we're all a uneducated, poor, dishonest and ignorant bunch. Her parents (lawyers from the Ann Arbor area) paid for her 60K college education. They also gave her a brand new Volvo, a credit card that was unrestricted, an apartment off campus for her last two years in college and they also helped buy her house in Washington State. She's never had a job and she's been handed everything in life. She thinks people need to be taxed more to take care of everyone who is less fortunate... probably because she doesn't know any different.

I'm not against welfare; I think it should be given out to people only as a last alternative, not a first option.
