Fanta, the fortunate people already contribute and the government wants them to contribute even more just so they can buy votes. Like I (and I think Jubs) have been saying - if you want to help people then do it without the government. There are hundreds of reputable charities that you can donate to. You could also volunteer your time at a local school, a church (mosque), or public center (like a homeless shelter). You could help a homeless man find a job, help teach an immigrant how to read and speak English, or just be the father-figure some child born to a single mother never had - not all meaningful contributions require large amounts of money... sometimes you might need to just listen, or lend a hand, or give advice. There is a lot you can do as an individual and it doesn't require the government taking more of your (or your mothers) money.

That's my philosophy on it all. But what the fuck do I know about helping people... I apparently hate everyone and only care about myself.

Given a choice between privatizing welfare or keeping it federally-operated, I'll always choose the latter.

lol I'm sure this isn't the case, we both get riled up in arguments and resort to sarcasm and name-calling and the like sometimes. It's only normal. Despite it all, I'm still waiting to have lunch with both you and Jubs sometime soon.

I actually love your philosophy, you really can't argue with it in the ideal sense. However... I don't know how realistic it is to believe that enough people would be willing to contribute anything without any pressure. If the whole country shared your view, I really don't think I'd be supporting welfare.

Or maybe it would because it's a great way getting votes?

your parents worked hard and were taxed so some random person could benefit = X

your parents worked hard and gave willingly so their child can benefit = Y

How is X more acceptable than Y?

That's not true. The federal welfare and entitlement systems will always exist but they might not need to exist to such a degree. (Well, maybe in Obama's economy!) I have a couple opinions on why the federal system will always exist and why my idea is becoming harder to achieve...

Part of the problem, I think, is we've become so reliant on the government and less on family and community. It's so much easier to think the government will handle all our problems because that doesn't force us (as individuals) to see and handle problems on our own. There is little or no effort on our parts, ya know? Most of us pay our taxes and that money gets shuffled into whatever social program, where a portion of the money goes to paying the people and interests that drive the system.

Another part of the problem is people like Mayo who seem to disbelieve that this stuff actually happens. When people support the government being the ultimate provider of everything (well, a lot of things) then that only perpetuates the problem (or what I perceive to be the problem) and before long we'll be completely beholden to the government. There are a lot of people, companies, churches, schools and whatever else who volunteer a lot of time and money to helping others but those efforts are simply dismissed. With the constant dismissal and downplaying of those efforts it's kinda gives the false image that no one is doing anything and I think that false image makes individuals trying to help feel more daunting.

Lastly, I don't think people feel determined to get off welfare. There's no shame in it any longer. Receiving some payout from a social program seems so commonplace in America that it's almost accepted as a respectable 'job', and it's almost taboo to criticize people who are on a social program. (inb4 someone calls me out for being insensitive and not caring about my fellow man who is in dire need of help hurhurhur)

Again, just opinions...

Sarcasm never translates well on the internet, but since it bothered you so much we'll continue

Wait, perhaps I misread-- but I thought the point wasn't about the parents wanting to help their children, but the children growing up taking the free money from their parents and then being dicks to other people who also took handouts?

If you work hard and manage your money well, spend it on your children however you want- I don't think that's a problem. But at least make sure your kid knows better than to think it was theirs to begin with, and entitled to it all despite having nothing to do with the accumulation of the wealth. That's how we get such quality children as those that are featured on My Super Sweet 16.

If the government runs on tax money, and pays its employees with taxes, shouldn't we need the majority working in the private sector to bring in tax revenue?

Agreed - and what if they don't? What happens when those kids join the electorate?

Mind explaining to me why the government would need to give money to the destitute if private charities and donations made sure that everyone had a roof over their head and three squares a day?
