Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a new tv for my xbox gaming and netflixing, and I was looking at the 37" Westinghouse LCD one, for like $380 at best buy. Thing is, my tech illiteracy isn't limited to just computers.. So I have no idea what's good for gaming etc etc. Here are my questions:

1) is Westinghouse a good brand? The reviews I read online aren't really helping, as I'm not sure of they are referring to gaming. I also don't know how important brand is in the tv world lol.

2) should I be looking at LCD or LED? Not too interested in the tech aspect of it, just which one would be better for gaming. It seems split online, with palsma being tossed in and even a "Samsung marketing LED is BS!" claim lol.

3) should I just suck it up and buy a known brand for the same or very similar price but 5" smaller? Idk I really want a big tv but not if it's going to be crap. Also, any alternative suggestions of 32"-37" HD tvs would be fabulous!

Any and all help is greatly appreciated! <3

I've been in love with my Panasonic Viera and I would reccomend it to anyone.

I'd go plasma. Plasma TVs get a little warm and you might get minor burn-in if you get a cheap ass TV, but most TVs are good about preventing burn-in and they have built in erasers (swipers and pixel jitters) which do a good job clearing it out (the only game I experienced a bit of burnin was on Fallout 3 because it's so dark and the HUD is bright). The contrast and blacks (color, not people) are amazing on Plasma, as well as the refresh rates, so you'll have a lesser chance of experiencing ghosting.

I didn't go LCD because I wanted to watch sports and game on my TV, so the refresh rates were a little weak for my needs. I also didn't like how washed out the picture looked next to a plasma.

I didn't go LED LCD because it's a new technology so the price was kinda high and I'm not sure what type of life I'd get out of that system. LEDs last forever it seems, but who knows if they work just as well in TVs and what happens if an LED burns out?

Some tips:
* Try to get a minimum of 240Mhz for the refresh rate.
* 1920 x 1080 (1080p) should be the resolution you aim for. (Edit: I think on a smaller TV you're stuck with 720p)
* 2000000:1 is a better contrast ratio than 100000:1 - try to get the highest contrast you can.
* Think about where you're going to position the TV and determine if glare will be an issue; most TVs have a gloss screen which can be annoying with high-light rooms.
* I doubt they make TVs without a 16:9 aspect ratio, but just make sure that's what you're buying.
* The more HDMI and Component inputs, the better.

This is what I use for my gaming/tv viewing. I like it a whole lot.

Thanks for those tips eturnal, they actually help me out a ton. The only problem I'm havin with plasma is that they don't seem to come in anything less than 42" which would be overdoing it. Heck 37" is pushing it! But I appreciate it nonetheless.

Any opinions on Westinghouse as a brand?

LED TVs and Monitors

The only thing that changes is how the monitor is lit up. It's the exact same panel and such you are used to. The only thing you need to be aware of is edge lit or full array and if it has local-dimming.

There is no specific measurement of this

Another horrible design by companies because the average consumer doesn't know any better. Matte screen could suit you better.

Thanks to everyone for the help. My only issue now is deciding whether I should get the Westinghouse (37", but unknown brand) or the LG (32", known brand, $20 more).

I worked out some finances and found out that it would cost me roughly $130-$150 for a new TV plus a new Wii. I'm pretty excited, but I don't want the experience to be marred by a sucky tv :(

My concern with a Westinghouse (since no one really heard much about them) would be dead pixels. I've heard horror stories about some no-name brands having a bunch of dead/stuck pixels and those will ruin a good movie or game... and then any attempts to get customer service about a low-end TV (like most low-end electronics) is nightmarish, I hear.

I'd say you might wanna go LG in this case, but 32" is so tiny. How far away will you be viewing the TV from?

those were my concerns as well, and I suppose I always knew in my head that the LG would be the smarter choice despite the size. I just needed someone to push me over the fence. Thanks again <3

I've had a few Westinghouse devices, and I don't remember any of them being crap, but LG would probably be the better of the two choices.

Isn't Westinghouse also a publishing company?

As the former Best Buy employee of this post I will lend you my 2 cents. Westinghouse is not a bad brand of tv, it is a lower technology brand. LG will have a picture that appears to have a better picture because they tend to have the newest technology. Westinghouse is a brand that is into all kinds of electronics, controls, and appliances. I would recomend LG, Panasonic, Samsung, and NEC/Mitsubishi if you are looking for top end preformance. You can look at the BBY brand Insignia if you want to spend a little less, but look at the remotes and the silver manufacturer tag and you can usually tell who actually makes it since Insignia is a lable, not a manufacturer. LED is probably going to get out of the range you are looking to spend. Also make sure that you are looking at the same types of cables for your systems that the demos are set up with. BBY was notorious for hooking up the high end tvs with monster cables and the lower end tvs with off brand cables.

Not the same Westinghouse. This is a division of White-Westinghouse which is known more for electronic controls. They are the parent company for Fridgidaire. Westinghouse, and several other manufacturing companies.

Monster cables vs generic is based almost entirely around marketing hype. Don't waste 10x the money on cables that do the exact same thing.
