Different does not mean worse, and if that were true nothing worth reading would ever be more than a page long.

Neither does being different imply that it's good, nor does the length imply it's worth reading. You live in an era where people can communicate complex thoughts to mass audiences in 140 words or less, and many people are successful in exploiting that medium. The problem isn't your audience's "short attention span," the problem is that you've confused eloquence with spewing bullshit.

Being different doesn't prove worth, but in an era where there's so much ideological banality, that difference certainly does imply worth.

No they can't and that is a major element of what is wrong with our political culture.

As the very article you linked said. An article which is longer than almost any of my posts but only makes a single point.

Quote:
...Even if voters were trying to make decisions...how likely are they to have remotely accurate information? ...The truth is ...the way most people read...getting fast impressions rather than scanning articles carefully for the nuances hidden in the 12th paragraph, they probably have only the vaguest sense of what’s going on.

Mass media is mass media. Most people don't like to think of themselves as amongst the ranks of the hoodwinked, but it's the way of things that those who aren't will always be the far minority. Working as intended.

It's strange when the shoe moves to the other foot, isn't it?

Are you actually suggesting that Tweeting can convey complex thoughts......

There's a difference in conveying complex thoughts and being the reason the internet is filling up

The reason the internet is filling up - what in its multitude is unprecedented - is the number of people who have something to say, most of them idiots.

In terms of the volume of what is posted by individual posters, the internet is middling at best. What is considered TLDR by internet standards would be considered sub-precis by pre-internet standards.

You can Google any given topic and get tens of thousands of hits from people with any level of knowledge, experience, intelligence and common sense. Relying on citation alone you can therefore use Google to prove any point no matter how specious. Each of those individual hits, however, isn't problematic because of TLDR status - it's because of the sheer number of dolts out there.

With Charmin Ultra, less is more!

Yes, I am. Does it happen with regularity? No, but it can be done.

Most of you don't have complex thoughts to convey.

All the more reason it shouldn't take umpteen paragraphs to not convey them.

I think a communistic society is probably the best thing to aspire to be, one where everyone is treated equally and all contributed equally, and those who need help are given their fair share, and those who can afford to give, give what they can afford. That was probably/possibly our roots as tribal hunters and gatherers, and I see no real reason why we shouldnt try to move back to that instead of an everyone for themselves-esque system we have now. Yes I know Communism doesnt work, but that doesnt mean you cant aspire to it. Practically, some form of socialism similar to parts of the canadian/norway/sweden/british systems all have good aspects to it, and if all the good aspects are put together I think that would be for the best.

IMO anyone who disagrees lacks empathy for others less fortunate or they see them as lazy insert insult/condescending term here.

I have pretty well always thought this in one way or another, and everything i learn/see in my life reinforces this idea with me. I may change, but i do not see it changing in the near future.

I am THE man.

Tribal societies weren't communistic. The very existence of things like cave paintings and headdresses and tribes themselves proves that. The better hunter, the stronger athlete, the more gifted weaver - any and all would earn more than their share in repute.

Utopian societies of the sort you describe - equality of outcome - are self-defeating. Either they stagnate, or they disintegrate as human nature reasserts itself.

It is not practical to expect everyone to be able to put forth the same effort, or the most possible effort, and reap the same rewards. It is not even physically possible because of the massive surplus we would have at full employment.

What's the need that everyone should have the same income? Isn't it enough that people have the means to get by in life?

It is enough - it is best - that society provide a decent and livable life for all its citizens. Equality of opportunity not equality of results. The ultimate, and eminently practical, utopian idea that should drive society: to encourage all to grow to their maximum potential as individuals.
