Sorry to make yet another political thread on these forums, but this made me LOL given all the people who are like "Obama is ruinin the dayum country...the Republicans are gonnna DOMMMINATEEE"

http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2011/0 ... ssues.html

Quote:
“While President Obama for the first time has fallen under 40 percent approval for handling the economy, the Republicans in Congress do even worse, 28 percent approval,” Langer writes. “On handling the deficit, it’s a weak 38 percent approval for Obama, but a weaker 27 percent for the GOP. And on handling taxes, Obama has 45 percent approval, the GOP, 31 percent.”

Doesn't shock me.

People are sick of the pointless political posturing and pointless arguing that is resulting in absolutely nothing getting done.

Instead of simply blaming the other side for all the issues (again, both ways), we need to be finding solutions. Our lovely government isn't solving anything. The GOP is no help. Obama is no help. We are all fucked.

I'm afraid I do not follow. In what way(s) does the dissatisfaction of persons render those persons "more libertarian" (as implied by your headline)? As far as I can tell -- and much to my chagrin -- the term "libertarian" is not used once in the body of the article to which you refer.

That being said, we would be much better off, I would think, to regard persons as "libertarians" only if those persons positively express a strong inclination towards both social and economic freedom. After all, one can just as easily be a "democrat" or a "republican" and be equally dissatisfied with the political environment (which, all things considered, is most likely the case).

Best,
Baron Wilhelm von Grimsby IV

The title of this thread is intended to be more of a joke than anything else.

The loose connection is that clearly people do not approve of either the GOP or Obama and the Democrats. My implication is that maybe Americans are realizing what an inefficient, ineffective clusterfuck government is when it comes to fixing things like the Economy. Hence, they are "becoming more libertarian"

Then I must confess myself to have failed to grasp your riffing-good sense of humour, sir! I shall hereby endeavour keep your jestful nature in mind from this point onward.

Cheers,

as many different factions as there are in the states(while most fall under democrat or republican) you can't say without a doubt that all the disaffected voters will go to libertarians in particular.

You don't know what the word "libertarian" means and should stop using it.

Nihilism is the belief that objective truth is unknowable.

Libertarianism is the belief that government and society should not infringe on personal freedoms.

Corn oil is an oil extracted from the germ of corn (maize). Its main use is in cooking, where its high smoke point makes refined corn oil a valuable frying oil.

Okay that was mean.

Quote:
lib·er·tar·i·an·ism/ˌlibərˈte(ə)rēəˌnizəm/
Noun: An extreme laissez-faire political philosophy advocating only minimal state intervention in the lives of citizens.

I know the definition. Working alongside a bunch of libertarians means I know quite a bit about them. I was referring to the opinion many libertarians have of government workers/leaders in general. That opinion being "the government shouldn't interfere in our personal lives, or the economy, or most things. The government is generally a bunch of morons who fuck things up anyway and are inefficient, which is all the more reason they shouldn't be interfering in our personal lives."

How I related this to the news story is because clearly these polls show most of society is seeing both sides (Democrat and Republican) as fucking things up when it comes to the economy. This is a sentimentality often held by many libertarians. Strictly libertarian philosophy? Of course not. But I'm sure we can agree that many libertarians distrust the government and have a low opinion of it in general (watch any South Park episode and see how they portray government).

Anyway, we're getting caught up in semantics here. Eturnal is right, shit thread.

That's not what the article is about.

The implication of low approval ratings is that someone else can do the job better, and the implication that someone else could do the job better is that they would have the right to do so. American horse-race politics.

Libertarianism has nothing to do with it.

Yeah, I am.

I usually am.

You say it sarcastically but the truth is: the fact that my opinions are better-informed, and that I personally am more critical and more intelligent than the vast majority of the population - all of which is objectively provable - does mean that my views are more likely to be factually correct.

You can call it conceit if you like but that is the reality. Wisdom and stupidity is a pendulum that swings both ways.
