Yap. Obama is scrambling the frequencies.

Edit: Looks like the BBA is still in the bill; I wonder if the states will ratify.

What's in the bill is a guarantee that both houses will vote on it. It will squeak through the House and fail like a retarded kid in calculus class in the Senate.

Then what? We default?

I feel like the Senate won't shoot it down because isn't it the last ditch effort?

Not the compromise bill, the BBA...the compromise bill just contains a provision that says both houses will vote on the BBA. There will be enough votes for it in the House, but Senate democrats are as likely to put limits on the spending power of congress as Aestu is to join a monastery and take a vow of silence.

Isn't the provision written to where any future debt ceiling increases would require that the states at least be sent the amendment for ratification? If it can't pass Congress and Senate then no debt ceiling increase. That'll force congress to act not rather than wait until the last minute.

Also Azelma, if you're concerned about defaulting make sure you don't vote for guys who want to spend a ton of money on social programs next time. ;)

the problem is the democrats want to spend a lot of money on programs, and the republicans don't want to make a lot of money off of businesses.

Cool, I'll just vote for guys who want to spend a ton of money on the military instead ;p

This. Dems want to avoid raping every social program ever, and tax the wealthy to make up the difference. Republicans don't want to increase government revenue, they just want to slash a ton of programs.

Bottom line, the cuts don't need to just be social programs, it needs to be these three things:

1. Military Spending
2. Medicare/Medicaid
3. Social Security

Cuts + the elimination of tax loop holes and breaks for corporations I think is the way to go. The problem is people are so stubborn in refusing to compromise that we're getting something that isn't as good as it could be.

That's unconstitutional.

Article One, Section Eight of the Constitution explicitly states it is Congress' authority to borrow money and craft fiscal policy. Article Four, Section Three explicitly states that Congress' authority supercedes that of the states.

The constitutional authority of Congress can't be altered or subverted without a constitutional amendment. GL getting one of those.

I don't agree. I think it is the middle ground which is proving to be the end of us.

Really, any internally consistent policy, left or right or whatever, would be fine. The problem is we don't have that, instead every bill on every topic (and not just the budget) is some sort of status quo, lowest-common-denominator compromise that has no real vision or goal, it just contains what everyone can agree on. So problems don't get solved.

Historically, a lack of watered-down compromise has been one of the strengths of American government. It's why our government has endured longer than any other government in the world except that of the British - because of strong executive power making cohesive visions a reality, and the excellent job the Senate subcommittees have done dealing with problems. To this day, nothing is more fearsome than being called before a Senate subcomittee. That's good government.

Unfortunately, this is beginning to change. Everyone's got an angle and it seems only bad policies can find enough consensus to become a reality.

I'm beginning to see how you view moderates so negatively, Aestu. You feel the only way for true progress is to work in extremes where someone always loses. I think progress can happen through compromise and is impeded by wildly swinging extremes.

Do you not believe in

situations?

Theres a big difference between being left or right and being extremely left or right.

I'm with aestu on this, a bit. Switching back and forth is a problem, and it gets us no where.

So we should do away with the 2 party system entirely?

I'll agree.
