Freedom, in the sense you describe it, is an illusion.

Everyone is in some way a dependent of society. The conditions for fulfilling and enjoyable life are to at least some extent non-negotiable and control our lives whether we realize it or not.

What has made people into dependents is not too much government intervention but too little. It is because people do not want government to be proactive in getting people on track that we settle on the hands-off compromise of check-cutting. The alternative would be the state spending that money to in some way better people's lives via programs that are not negotiable in their conception.

True freedom exists only inside one's head. To form ideas, values, a way of life based on knowledge of truth, and choosing the truths compatible with one's own character. Hence my belief that political and economic ideologies are arbitrary and the only constant is the preservation of social order.

For you and a lot of other people, that's true. If society shut down tomorrow, you'd have no idea how to craft anything from items you'd find in nature. You'd have no idea how to plant and harvest (though that's honestly not hard), or to raise food on the hoof. The thing is, though, that modern society/economy evolved out of a pooling of independent efforts, not for the purpose of diminishing the individual, but for the purpose of enriching the individual. Specialization didn't create a suffocating web that stifled freedom, it created a network that improved productivity to the point that one had the time and resources to indulge individual whims...many of which further enhanced and grew the network. You fail to view things this way because you find interaction with others to be an onerous obligation, and cannot perceive it as the rich opportunity it is. You think that just because you're trapped, so too must we also be. Thankfully, you're wrong.

Jubber

It did both.

That is something my chosen field of study helped me realize.

You mean for the liberals? Of course, the tricolor is the original liberal banner. Liberty, equality, fraternity; morality, dignity and common blood; a good civil life; etc.

To this day, the French embody liberalism like no other people in the world.

Just for fun:

I said in another thread that a policy needs to be internally consistent above all else...so I decided to put down what I'd imagine as pros and cons of each system, a la Alpha Centauri:

Anarchists
+ IMMUNE to conquest: citizens do not recognize authority in any form
+ More effective offensive intelligence operations: lack of cohesive organization and proactive pursuit of freedom
- Glacial economic and technological growth: lack of institution

Liberals
+ Rapid technological progress: openness to new ideas
+ Stronger currency: rule of law
- Reduced industrial and agricultural output: pampered workers

Facists
+ Rapid industrial growth: obsession with public works
+ Cheap military support: conscription and nationalized industry
- Glacial population growth: conservatism discourages immigration and large families

Libertarians
+ Superior agricultural output: land of small farmers
+ All costs cheaper: lack of red tape
- Low efficiency: lack of social and economic organization

Pacifists
+ IMMUNE to revolt: nation of sheep
+ Rapid population growth: peace and long life
- Weak military: intense fear of conflict

Canadians
+ Superior diplomacy: lack of enemies
+ Superior efficiency: eusocial life
- Very slow technological progress: National "Cuckoo Clock" syndrome
