I didn't really care before but if this works out how I want it to, it could be really awesome. Maybe everyone would have their own unique look you know.

in during every old school plate wearer running around in the alienbugwhatthefuck set from AQ40, if this is the whole "copy stats from set one, paste onto set 2 and use set 2's look"

a new generation of ugly upon everyone who still plays that game.

It amazes me how many wannabes actually try to pretend they did that stuff (which I myself didn't), the you quiz them, or point out anachronisms in their gearing, and they just get flustered but keep trying to bullshit.

It's baffling, tbh, and the fact that kind of behavior is so pervasive is testament to how far down the tubes WoW has gone.

Hell, the very fact people pretend to be "old school" because the here and now isn't good enough speaks volumes.

i started playing around the release of bwl, and ended up raiding soon after hitting 60, although the farthest i made it was a few bosses in to aq40. i even have all my old raiding gear, including fire and nature resist sets, on my rogue for some reason. Not that i can really prove i got it in vanilla. The only thing i really miss about it is how new the game felt, it was my first mmo, and thats what im referring to whenever i say something like "i miss vanilla." And thats what i think a lot of people mean when they say it, they may refer to things like 40 man raids or r14 pvp grinds ( i knew a mage that did the grind twice on the same character, the first time he did it they didnt have the spellpower dagger >.>), but it doesnt necessarily mean that they think the here and now isnt good enough, they just remember the there and then as feeling more fun because of the newness factor.

And even back when i was new to the game there were people who bragged about being old school, they bragged about raiding stratholme and ubrs, bragged about grinding r14 when the only bg available was wsg. Those types of people have existed since the game was released. The game hasnt really gone anywhere in reference to to that sort of behavior, its just become more stratified, there are more levels of old school now because of how old it is.

Six years isn't that long - Blizzard said Titan will have a lifespan of 20 years or more, and I think we'll eventually see MMOs (or a genre that will succeed MMOs) that are run as going concerns, for decades or even centuries. This is inevitable as the churn and pioneer era of MMO gaming passes and institution and stability set in, just like every other development like cars and computers.

I think what really drives this behavior is the developers' efforts to divorce prestige and difficulty or exclusivism. As Robokapp said, when all inequities are artificially nullified, people will create new ways of establishing a hierarchy. Even if it's pure pretension. After all, people want what they can't have, and a time machine certainly fits the bill.

I played in vanilla for a short period before TBC came out. I'll never get old though, YOUNG FOREVER SON!

A "costumes" tab?

Funny how RIFT has had that all along. How many more ideas will Blizzard "borrow" from everyone else?

Learning to adapt and evolve I imagine is part of good business. How well do you think Nintendo® would be doing if they decided their product (Mario Brothers) was good enough as is and that they didn't need to move up to 3D games and better graphics (Super Mario 64).

The bad part on Blizzards side is, WAITING till someone else already did it to do it. People have been asking for this sort of thing forever and Blizzard refused to do it. I'm sure part of RIFT development was taking what people wanted from WoW but Blizzard wouldn't give. Now RIFT is doing a great job because of it and so Blizzard is trying to play catch up. Probably, as Aestu said, too late.

Pre-RIFT Meeting
"The masses apparently want an appearance tab."
"No, we tell the masses what they want."

Post-RIFT Meeting
"We just lost even more Subs to RIFT."
"Is being able to look how you want to look that important to them?"
"Apparently so."
"Fine, fine, give the babies their bottles."

Hey, it could have happened D:

I started up Rift again.

The idea for costumes/appearance changes has been suggested since the first patch of beta, it's not like they're doing it now because some wow knock-off did it. In addition, there is still nothing other than a name to go by, there's a dozen things that npc could do. I don't see them allowing model item swapping or even coloring (how else could they get away with the lazy heroic recolorings)?

I know this. I'm just saying it's a little funny that they waited so long. So long in fact that another game already did it despite it being requested for over 7 years. I don't play RIFT nor do I intend to. I still play WoW but if you don't think it's just a little suspicious that they did it after RIFT then you're blind.

Your second point basicly is the only reason I thought it might not be an appearance tab. Are they really going to work "so hard" on new designs when people are just going to cover it up with Bloodfang?

One of the things I thought the NPC could possibly do is, much like the barber, allow you to recustomize your chars face/skin color. Only thing I see wrong with that is they charge you $10 to do that and name change so I doubt they'd risk cutting into profits there. Hell, it could be something dumb like it changes you into a different race for an hour (with hopes that you'll like that race better and pay for a race change).
