To be a Jew is to be a part of a shared culture and heritage. Same with black Americans.

My ancestors were German Jews - we left in 1871, after Bismarck emancipated the Jews, this is also when we took on our surname - and for some reason I can't fathom, my ancestors left Germany to live in the Russian Empire, near Kiev. We left for America after the Great Pogrom of 1905.

I don't have the same cultural background as the Jews who lived in Germany until the war because they "thought they were German" and still behave like Germans after they left. No more than my race makes me any more similar to Germans or Ashkenazi than pure physiology - no more similar than American blacks to Nigerians or Haitians.

There is a huge difference culturally between blacks who have recently (last 50 or so years) immigrated to the U.S from Africa vs those whose ancestors were slaves.
