I think it's funny that people still care about "status symbols" in WoW. Nothing more than pixels.

Capitalism.

All status symbols are, materially, nothing more than their components, whatever they may be; and status symbols long predate capitalism, and exist even in communist or collectivist societies.

I'm referring to status symbols that are used to reflect wealth/social status. Eg: Driving a Porsche

Status symbols in WoW are the same since true "wealth"/social status in WoW is based on:

Gear
Achievements/Misc Ratings
Mounts/Pets

When I see a player showing off some legendary weapon or showing their mount off on the bank steps I imagine these are the same people who would puff their chests out and walk around town flashing their Rolex at every passerby...or would court their blonde bombshell wife around like a trophy.

It's the exact same mentality. "Look what I have/have done, aren't you jealous?" (E-Peen) which I feel is an attitude that certainly predates capitalism...but is highlighted in capitalistic societies more than it is in any other system.

Games that center around "shinys" prey upon this fact.

Things like the Mechano-hog, then.

My mechanohog also got me gkicked from DIBT FAKK dozens of times, mainly because I'd invite to Dartreal into a party, zoom out of the pipe in Dalaran, and then parachute to safety as he ate a death knight tank repair bill.

I just use a rocket instead of a mechano hog. Though I am reminded of that thread where Tuhl made reference to "Mayo's sweet hog". Something about crusader aura.

If anything I like to ride on my no longer obtainable Swift Zhevra or 60% Brewfest Ram.

Lots of things in this game are rare because blizzard wants them that way. T3 from Naxx40 is not one of them. It is only rare because blizzard was lazy and had no idea how to open Wrath raiding up. So the revamped Naxx and made it an entry level raid. If not for this T3 would be just like every other old raid set. They didn't take Naxx out to preserve the essence of Naxx or something like that. It remains rare because people would run out of bank space and have to sell it. Honestly T3 looks ok. If people really want it that bad all they need to do is add an NPC to port us there.

With the restrictions on the gear at first I will probably not be using this service though. Maybe on my priest alt but that's it.

So let me ask you, Azelma:

Do you think that MMO status symbols that are legitimately rare/exclusive are more legitimate than things like Rolex watches or mechanohogs? Or do you oppose status symbols as a matter of principle?

What, for you, makes the practice distasteful?



It's not that Blizzard wanted T3 to remain rare, no, but the other way around: people want what is seen as rare or prestigious, but a lot of no-life nerds can't admit it, so they give BS like "it looks cooler". And now Blizzard is trying to pander to that element of the community rather than creating what an MMO is really all about which is true status symbols. They want to equalize prestige, and that's contrary to the nature of the beast.

Naxx-40 no longer exists in the game files. Adding an NPC that provides those textures adds up to the same thing.

Also, my favorite mount.
