Florida broski here. I'm surprised that it didn't hit us that hard for once, considering that we haven't had a major storm since Wilma in '05. But it's pretty funny to see all of my fellow East Coasters freaking out about a fairly weak hurricane hitting areas that, as far as buildings go, are pretty hurricane-resistant in the first place. I mean, sure, I wouldn't recommend going out into the storm if/when it hits --- I remember watching, on live TV, a reporter getting smacked in the side of the head by a piece of Styrofoam that had been turned into a projectile during one of the 2004 hurricanes --- but I highly doubt that the majority of your houses/apartments, which are likely much more structurally sound than most shitty Floridian dwellings, will be damaged at all. Especially since it's supposed to downgrade to a tropical storm within the next day or two.

the issue in NYC is the storm surge more than the storm itself.

long island is going to get the east side of the storm. west has stronger rain, east has stronger wind.

the transit system is mid-shutdown (several hour process), bridges will be closed, and evacuation's already under way. "next day or two" doesn't mean much when it will be sitting over NYC at 8am tomorrow, coinciding with high tide.

True, true. I suppose I'm biased in my views on hurricane damage seeing as how I've never really had to worry about massive storm surge in all the years I've been here, since I'm just one town away from the Everglades and several towns away from the beach. I mean, our town's had mild flooding in recent years, but nothing too bad. The real bitch is the wind for most of Florida, especially since we're usually the only ones (aside from the rest of the Gulf Coast on occasion) to ever get storms above a category two or three.

It appears on the map I linked earlier I've been upgraded from pink to red.

Either way, it'll be fun. I have front row seating for this one.

Checking in: Alive, with power, no trees down and pump reservoirs are bone dry. We're expecting these pretty gnarly conditions (Steady heavy rain and strong gusts for a few hours) to get worse as the night goes on, being pretty rough until the morning. I've been checking my regional power map and we're starting to get outages in the area, but nothing like South-east Virginia. Kinda glad I don't live east of the Chesapeake.

My wife has been reading comments on local news stories and lots of people in the area have downed trees, power lines and localized flooding.

Guess it's time to get the generator ready just in case...

I guess it's a matter of perspective. This is a huge, slow moving storm capable of damaging winds hundreds of miles from the center and lots of rain along the coast. In addition to the rain, the storm surge, coupled with a higher than normal tide, is going to increase the chance of coastal flooding... especially in NYC. If your power hasn't been knocked out and if you don't have strong winds then I hope your night continues like that. I was just listening to Bob McDonnell (Gov. of Virginia) and he was saying Dominion is reporting about 2,000,000 people without power (which is about 1 in 4)... and that's just moving through the Norfolk area. I'm sure that number will rise when all the Co-ops and NoVA folks are counted in as the storm treks northward.

My generator says, "Don't use in the rain." Erm, I think I'll take my chances later. If I never post here again just assume I electrocuted myself somehow...

it was raining pretty hard this morning, then stopped, with periodic downpours. it's been raining for the last 4 hours.

also of note: windows in some buildings in manhattan are quite old. yes, shiny buildings, but older buildings don't get windows replaced easily, or in the case of most landlords, willingly.

oh good, the flashing on the roof is leaking and moving down to the first floor kitchen. i has a bucket now. and the light fixture over the sink is now no longer a booby trap containing 2 cups of water and electricity.

the wind is having a difficult time figuring out which way to blow, though.
