So I've been playing through this Dark Half SNES game.

It's very interesting.

It bears a very strong resemblance to Diablo - isometric view, cosmic forces of good vs evil with humans trapped in the middle, and a rogue third faction, similar artwork/general feel (screams of the damned, skeletons, crude/grim pixelated demons), dark medieval towns, harsh and austere demigods, runes on the ground, narrow stone hallways, etc. The animations and artwork are very similar. And ofc there are musings about humans being evil and deserving damnation, etc.

The gameplay is...very weird. Literally every step you the player take depletes your power bar. A lot of the levels consist of weird memory games where you have to step on invisible panels in the correct order; failing to do so sends you back a room, so if you don't have a guide handy, it's necessary to go through the same room dozens of times to find the right path. The general tuning is similar to 7th Saga or Final Fantasy I - really overtuned.

Game setting is the "week of judgement" (similar to Parasite Eve); each day you play as the hero, and each night you play as Satan.

The lore is interesting, a weird pastiche of Dracula, Christian mythology and Japanese superstition. Some parts are very obviously based on Paradise Lost (Satan's throne and his general personality and relationships with others are portrayed in exactly the same ways). Unlike in Christian mythology, the devil can kill people (and playing as Satan, you can wipe out entire towns, Populous-style), but he can't kill people who are totally innocent (very few qualify - as Satan you can slaughter women and children, leaving their charred skeletons behind). There are even some orphanages you can raid (as in, more than one), killing the matron then all the orphans.

I have no idea why this game didn't make American release. Really interesting.

Check it out imo...

Also, I am very depressed. Which is why I am doing this.

You ought to play (and finish) Lost Vikings solo if you haven't already.

See also Shadowrun on SNES. I thought it was a pretty good game.

So there's this happy duder:

Image

I keep thinking I've seen this before in some other game...an abomination that looks like a big lump of flesh, with beady little eyes and a gaping maw, with cilia for limbs. He melees really really hard, and I think the other ciliated, beady-eyed, brown lump abomination I'm thinking of also hit really hard.

I saw it in some other console game but I can't remember for the life of me what it was.
Anyone remember? It's really gnawing at me.

Do you mean

Because this guy hit like a goddamn truck unless you froze him.

EDIT: Well I guess he isn't a heap of flesh and a gaping maw. But that's the first thing I thought of.

No and I've never actually played Earthbound.

It's gnawing at me...I want to remember what it was.

Maybe but I don't think so. I almost think it was Persona or Valkyrie Profile or something. One of those Japanish games that feature those kinds of ciliated, lump-like abominations.

It reminded me a bit of the garbage boss in Parasite Eve 2 at first but I'm pretty sure I've seen something similar on a snes game
