@Grimm, yah, I'd still have sound and everything, my screen would either freak out and go black or just go straight to black.

@the rest of you guys: thanks for the help, but I'm not to worried about testing the GPU/PSU/CPU to see if one of them is the problem. I'm doing a complete rebuild so they're about to get recycled anyway.

I won't be able to test the monitor on a TV until this weekend, but that seems like it will be the surest way to do so.

Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it.

if the monitor doesnt work and you are looking for an inexpensive fix i reccomend opening the monitor and check for blown/bulged capacitors. this is a very common problem and quite easy to fix (just replace the capacitors). i can link some good guides when i get on my computer later today.

Failing RAM will cause a system to blue screen, complete freeze, and fail to POST/boot up. A failing HDD has no direct affect on the display turning back and there should be other signs if it was true anyway. Corrupt files, system crashes, and errors when running or copying/deleting stuff. Or in my case the MBR would get corrupt every few hours so I couldn't do much of anything.

The only bad experience with a PSU going out was the entire system would shut off during a game and progressed towards not being able to get past the Windows loading screen in a short time. I would assume the same should happen with others since this was about 7 years ago.

@Nechra
That stuff is nasty and I would never do it with new parts.

@Zaryi
If you want help picking out parts toss a price range out

If you're running Windows 7, turn off Aero. Change your theme to a basic simple one, reboot, and tell us if you experience the black screen when logging in again.

Update your graphics card drivers. If the issue persists, I'd run a diagnostic for your GPU from the manufacturer, if possible.

Overclockable processor and 1TB hard drive included with a $10 off promo until the 5th (EMCKBGK32) or put that money towards a 6870/6950. PSU doesn't have a power cord included as part of their "green" label so save your current one.

I have a 3 month old 700gb hard drive, not going to buy another. I kinda want to stick with the motherboard I have selected because the second PCI-E slot means I could crossfire at a later date if I wanted to. I like the aesthetics of my case too, bu the processor/memory combo is tight, thanks :D

I didn't know if you wanted that option or not. You could get a 6950 with this and still be at $800 though.

An acquaintance told me I should get a CPU fan. Worth it, or just stick with the one in the box? I have no desire to OC.

You won't need one if you don't OC. They won't give you a heatsink is insufficient at stock settings, but you can get this if you want to keep it cooler and more quiet likely. I use it and it works great. Includes paste if you don't want to buy Arctic Silver/MX4, just be sure you don't use too much if you go for it. Stock = push the pins, lock it down and you're done since it has paste applied on already. 212+ is a bit more involved and requires a test to make sure you get the right amount of paste down.

That combo is available for the non-K version also if you want to save $10 too.

I'm not going to sound like I know exactly what is wrong, but if you can reproduce it every time just by logging in I doubt it is the monitor. There is an unlikely possibility the cable is just bad instead of the whole thing. There is something you can try with the graphic card though. You can bake it at 385F for 6-10 minutes.

Actually you should try this with your 8800s too, Weena.

Let's do this next week if I'm still coming over.
