Had another earthquake last night (1am?)... was a 4.5 and I felt like it shook my bed for a whole minute. Started pretty heavy (to where I could hear all sorts of shit rattling in my house) but then it kinda died down and felt like a gentle rolling for a bit.

I dunno how you Californians adjust to this shit on a regular basis. Since the first one started out gentle and then jumped into the heavy shaking, I keep expecting each aftershock to do the same thing... and when it doesn't, I feel relieved... but fuck does it put me on edge whenever I feel a vibration. -__-

Most of California is off the San Andreas faultline, which runs up and down the coast, and therefore not susceptible to earthquakes. If you live 75 miles inland, which most of the state does, San Fransisco and LA can be shaking and you won't feel a thing.

Quakes that are strong enough to be felt in susceptible regions are really rare. More often than not you'll second-guess yourself and ask if you felt it at all.

most of california is having quakes all the time, they're just normally very very low on the scale.

I have a friend that works at HP...their building in Herndon was actually damaged. She's been working from home since it happened.

I have to say, I was thoroughly amused by the whole situation. It's fun watching how stupid everyone gets. Everyone was standing outside our building afterwards (we were across the street getting lunch when it happened), and one of the guys from work told them that if there were aftershocks, it would be a terrible place to stand because the glass in the building would shatter, fall, and slice them to ribbons. When we got upstairs and looked out the window, they were all standing in the middle of the parking lot.

Quote:
A crane collapsed at the National Cathedral Tuesday, damaging church buildings and nearby cars.

The crane was working on the south side of the cathedral, fixing damage to the central tower caused by the earthquake that struck in late August. A spokesperson for the DC Fire and EMS Department said "a small church and some vehicles" were damaged.

The crane that collapsed was "at least over 300 feet tall" according to Richard Weinberg, spokesman for the cathedral. It caused damage to the cathedral's Herb Cottage, where the gift shop is located, and the Church House, which houses the headquarters for the Episcopal diocese.

Emergency services are at the site and no injuries have been reported.

I dare you to try to repair the obelisk.
just don't expect any miracles this time.

when you type all small like that, it just means I'm not going to be bothered to copy paste to blow it up.

and when you answer this post with a really small font'd post, i'm not going to be bothered to copy paste blow that up either.

Natural Disastery: http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/09/08/li ... acuations/

The flooding has been terrible here. I'm in central Pennsylvania, in an area known as the Susquehanna River Valley. There are still roads out all over the county and rain is forecast to continue until Sunday. I was lucky, but the area my parents live in was possibly the worst hit. They've got about 6 feet of water in their basement, there's never been a drop to get in over the previous 15 or so years we've lived there.
