1. Earthbound
2. Terranigma
3. Chrono Trigger/SMRPG/Lufia 2

I can't decide between them really.

Late-era RPG similar to 7th Saga/Illusion of Gaia but much more expansive, colorful, and better-executed. I haven't played it myself, probably should. I do know, interestingly enough, that some of the in-game zones are named after American heartland states.

It was never released in the US but it was translated into English for the UK/AUS market; I don't recall if PAL games are playable on a modded SNES console.

If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.

To this day I still think it's incredibly cute that the first paladin tanking weapon in WoW was from the first SNES RPG I ever played.

Also, no one has mentioned Star Ocean, Seiken Densetsu 3, or Bahamut Lagoon (most underrated). Why Square hated Americans so much, we cannot know.

I liked Tales of Phantasia better than SO1. Seiken Densetsu 3 was good but not as fun as Secret of Mana, see Secret of Evermore. Bahamut Lagoon I never got into but I heard good things.

Ever tried 7th Saga?

Yeah. I remember when I found out you could actually get more than one hero.

It was beautiful, that first fight.
