This is an example of why raising taxes is largely unnecessary, simply evaluating how we utilize the money already taxed would be far more productive and stimulating to bringing us out of this recession.

I think eventually everything will be digital, and it will eventually be more cost efficient to just have 1 ipad with all the books a student needs in it than all those books.

maybe not for KINDERGARTNERS at this point, but maybe high school at least.

probably too early for it in general right now, however.

eventually everything will be digital. I agree with you there.

I'm merely stating that $200,000 spent strictly on iPads for kindergartners in the middle of a budget crisis is fucking stupid as hell.

Its obviously cheaper than buying computers and textbooks.

You're going to pull something in your leg if you jerk your knee this hard again.

EDIT: This reminds me of the "America's Poor Aren't that Poor" thing that Fox News did, where because someone owns a refrigerator, they're obviously wealthy enough to pay taxes.

iPad's (certainly the second, newer generation) aren't cheap enough to be remotely comparable to books, especially when you're not loaning them out, but giving them out.

I'm sure tablets are super useful, but right now, I don't see them surpassing textbooks and library computers with internet access enough to justify being costlier. Especially on top of how tight budgets are.

Superintendent is a putz. I wonder what form his kickback comes in.

People purchasing refrigerators with their own income is somehow comparable to the state funding iPad2's for every Kindergartner in Cohen County, ME?

lolwut

You really bit hard on the media twisting the story. The article starts: "All children in a Maine school district" but then only focuses on the youngest kids in an attempt to fool people in to thinking all that money was going into 5 year olds.

Despite the phrasing in the article they are not giving the ipads to kids. This same district had a similar program for middle school kids, and many of those ipads are still in use in the high school.

They've already surpassed textbooks. Now that there is a slightly higher profile market and a trend towards this kind of stuff in the classroom, more publishers will produce interactive textbooks. Ipads already connect to wifi, and frankly there isn't much you need a computer for if everyone has an ipad.

This isn't the first program of it's type the district has done, and apparently the first one showed positive results. Damn him for wanting school children to do better, that greedy son of a bitch is only in it for the money, if only some private business would take over then they'd only be in it for the...I mean...oh wait.

High School, sure. I can see that.

Kindergarten? Come the fuck on. How did you spend your kindergarten? Were you doing trigonometry or were you playing blocks, learning social skills and what is acceptable and not acceptable, how to work with your peers, learning that you'll go to time out if you show little Suzy your pp.

etc.

The irony here is painful. You don't understand the economics of the decision but because the word taxpayer appeared it's clearly an evil idea and a shining example of how bad government is.

Because if we don't buy kindergartners iPad2's, they will grow up believing the Earth is flat.

I think it could be better utilized in a different setting than 5 year olds though.
