I agree. there's nothing in the elementary school playbook that requires anything high tech.

middle school and up, fine.

The iPad the kids got was $475. My Biology 101 textbook was somewhere around $300.

I've only been able to find that number in this one article, so I don't put a lot of stock in it. They are probably getting them much cheaper than 475. It would make good sense for apple to cut a good deal and try to get into the school market on a wider scale.

So, let me get this straight, a majority of people in this thread argue that it's a waste of money because 5 year olds don't need iPads....yet these same people think it's cool if it were older kids?

Why not get kids used to using technology early on...won't they develop skills and understanding earlier, which will help them later in life?

There's a reason you should consider making your 6 year old take music lessons and play sports at that age...because the younger you get them used to things and learning things, the more time they will have with it overall in the course of their lives = they will be better.

Also, iPad's are pretty amazing with interactive reading, and can store many different books. Perhaps implementation could have been improved by getting iPads just for the classroom...you know, every 2 students have to share one at story time or whatever.

Also Mayo is right about the books...a ~$500 iPad will still be cheaper than buying 5 books for every little shit kid.

azelma, i said that if the ipads were for replacement of books, its more than cost effective for college, high school, and probably middle school.

elementary? I dunno. i dont know how many books i used back then or how much they cost.

I never had a book until I was in middle school. At least one I had to carry home anyway.

I suppose its okay but I don't know about lower costs. Companies won't sell any books, more like lease them. I've had textbooks in high school 15 years old and still in decent shape.

Having to buy newer editions since your book deleted itself after 2 years sounds like money lost.

It's BS. Pure technophilia, shill for solving more difficult problems, and greedy contractors want to make money. Almost all the cost of books is licensing and that doesn't change with format. Paper books are easier to handle especially for kids. Paper is also a lot cheaper when you factor in the limited lifespan of the ebooks and high cost.

This isn't the first program of it's type the district has done, and apparently the first one showed positive results. Damn him for wanting school children to do better, that greedy son of a bitch is only in it for the money,

When I say "shill for more difficult problems" this is what I mean. It's a lot easier to preen self-righteously and blame the lack of tech toys than ask what is really wrong and what needs to be done. Kids aren't not learning the basics because they don't have ipads.

Because kids not being "comfortable with technology" is not a problem. Lack of proficiency in the basics are.

There's no such thing as interactive reading. Kids need to learn patience and discipline. The entire problem with education today is lowering the bar and calling it progress.
