There's a lot of "me's" and "I's" in this thread. But you guys have to realize that even if it doesn't infect YOU, you are still carrying and producing the virus and inadvertently spreading it through simple interpersonal exchange. Will explain how this works upon request.

I'm surprised to see that many of you aren't going to get it, to be honest. I know that most of you have to pay for it, but it really isn't that expensive and is well worth it. You really cannot get sick from the vaccine and any correlation between the two is mere coincidence.

I'm not trying to put more money into pharmaceutical companies or anything. I also love you guys. I want you to be healthy and not contribute to spreading this annoying virus. It will never be extinct, but at least it will stop mattering so much every winter.

How can you possibly be surprised at the response. This board has always been ripe with conspiracy theorists and lacking in scientific education/knowledge. There were maybe 1-2 people that I was surprised by the rest I'm not shocked by at at. The responses so far have basically been "I'm too lazy to/I don't want to pay 20 bucks."

I guess I give people too much credit? I try to think of the good in people instead of the silly, I suppose.

You are very similar to Masters from House.

so getting the shot, being sick for a week from it is better than not getting the shot, possibly catching the flu and being sick for a week from it how exactly?

I don't get it because I'd rather have someone who actually needs it (read: someone who can actually die from getting the flu) have mine.

Also, I have very little risk of spreading it to others in my line of work (except maybe the kitchen staff). I wash my hands about once a hour (or more, depending on what I'm working with) and I'd get quadruple fired if I did anything that would spread the disease (ex. sneezing all over people's food).

EDIT: I also have a paralyzing fear of needles.

The first decent bit of support for the don't take the vaccine side. I wonder how many vaccines are available and whether or not "running out of it for those who really need it" is an actual problem. Time to google.

They usually run out of vaccines in Cleveland. I'm not sure about Cinci, mainly because I don't watch the local news here.

So I brought up the flu shot issue at lunch today. The overwhelming consensus was that no one is getting flu shots. Main issues cited were:

1. It actually will get you sick
2. Waste of money/time
3. Doesn't really work
4. You can have bad reactions to it - one coworker told a story she read about someone who had to get their legs amputated after getting a flu shot (lol)
5. Another worker said that her grandmother got one and hasn't been the same since...has been in and out of the hospital

Fanta, it seems there's a lot of misinformation/opposition to this flu shot thing.

1. There is a chance that you will have 1-2 days of mild-moderate symptoms.
Soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given
Fever
Aches

If you are referring to the chances of contracting Guillain-Barre the chances of this happening are around 1 in 1 million.
2. 20 dollars and an hour or so of time (you can equate for yourself what this is worth)
3. It's very effective at stopping the viruses that it is designed to stop.

A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus;
A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like virus;
B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus.

4. There is a risk of an allergic reaction to some of the ingredients. Luckily you can research the ingredients and if you are allergic then you are definitely excusable for not wanting to receive the shot. If you are unsure of whether or not you are allergic talk I'm sure you can talk to a doctor.

5. Meaningless did the co-worker give you the diagnosed reason as to why she "hasn't been the same since." Doubtful because this isn't an actual symptom of anything.

I did quick googling and because the vaccine did not change from last year to this year there is no evidence to suggest there will be a shortage (more time for production I assume).

They usually have a lot of shots to begin with in this area and really push people getting them, but then always run low and tell people not to get them if you don't need one.

I don't think I've ever gotten a flu shot, and have only had the flu two or three times. One of those times I caught the swine flu and it was only 3 days of being tired and congested before I felt fine. Easiest flu I ever had. The person I (probably) got it from had a terrible time with it, lasted weeks.

We've had shortages in non-panic years, but if there is suddenly some new gerbil flu there will certainly be a rush on them.

I can understand fear of shortage for those who desperately need one being a reason for not getting a shot.

http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2009/ ... accine.php

That story has been pretty much debunked. The woman was either not suffering from Dystonia at all and faked (poorly) the symptoms, or she had a case of psychogenic dystonia meaning that her symptoms were entirely psychological and not a neural problem. It was also the first ever reported case of dystonia as a side effect from flu vaccinations. More than 100 million people get flu shots each year in the U.S.
