http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupy_Wall_Street

https://occupywallst.org/

Quote:
Occupy Wall Street is an ongoing demonstration[3] opposing corruptive corporate influence over U.S. politics, the monied corruption of democracy[4] and a lack of legal repercussions over the global financial crisis.

The aim of the demonstration is to begin a sustained occupation of Wall Street, the financial district of New York City, to protest perceived corporate greed and social inequality. Organizers intend for the occupation to last "as long as it takes to meet our demands." Demands are in the process of being negotiated and developed.

By October 1, similar demonstrations were held in Washington, Los Angeles, Boston and Portland, Maine.

I like some of the ideas behind it, but the agenda/demands aren't very clearly defined.

Quote:
The protest has been criticized for its lack of focus and actionable agenda. In an article that was critical of the protesters, Ginia Bellafante wrote in The New York Times: "The group’s lack of cohesion and its apparent wish to pantomime progressivism rather than practice it knowledgably is unsettling in the face of the challenges so many of its generation face — finding work, repaying student loans, figuring out ways to finish college when money has run out."

Perhaps I'm too skeptical, but I doubt this protest will turn into any meaningful change, though it spreading to other cities is interesting. Corruption in a the upper class / government is impossible to root out at this point (yeah yeah, "see sig" I know, Aestu).

Thoughts?

Nice slogan. It's tempting, honestly. As Azelma said, my concern is that in the here and now it will not pan out. I'm thinking next time - and there will be a next time - I'm going to go with a stepladder and camera.

But I'll tell you this. We won't see two thousand disgruntled unemployed individuals crowding a NYC block again, in our young adult lifetimes.

Within our young adult lifetimes...we will see twenty million angry individuals crowding NYC. Because there are just that many people who will eventually become so desperate that they feel they have nothing to lose. And when things reach that point - and they will, in our own young adult lifetimes - those people won't tamely allow themselves to be arrested. They will fight back.

Where we go from there is impossible to know.

Do you think Louis XVI was afraid of some disenfranchised peasants?
Do you think Nicholas II was afraid of some old babushkas?
Do you think Gorbachev was afraid of some disgruntled East German kids?

No. I'm saying that's what's in store.

Do you think the people who showed up for those things weren't "unwashed"? lol.

there's a difference between being unable to bathe and choosing not to.

the facilities today are quite a bit better than in FRANCE hundreds of years ago.

But I agree, if all they're doing is looking like beggars and chanting bullshit at a soundproof building, then they won't accomplish anything. If it escalates, there's a possibility. I still think its slim though.

What makes you think that? How is this any different than what has happened in the past? What, you think the people who overthrew the monarchists and communists didn't look like beggars? lol.

By "escalate" - I take it you're referring to this specific incident. You're not seeing the big picture. This incident will probably peter out. But like I said, the underlying problems are not going to go away, they will get worse...and within our young adult lifetimes, we will see movements of millions of people with nothing to lose on the streets.

The Bastille, March 1917 and Fall of the Wall weren't the first civil disturbances. They were simply the occasions when the pot finally boiled over.

This isn't a populist movement, and check the photo above: the guy is using a G-series Asus laptop with an HD webcam. The laptop sells for something between 1100 and 2000$ depending on the model, and I don't even want to think about what an HD camera costs. This from someone in a bunch of retards complaining about the "evil" of capitalism while obviously enjoying its perks. They're a bunch of spoiled losers who are still bumming around on their parent's dime trying to be "cool" and "do something that matters," but then opting for the laziness of just making themselves feel like cool people who do things that matter by making a moronic circus act of themselves.

While I think they'd send a better message if they were better dressed (really, if they just didn't look like hippies, because fucking no one listens to hippies), I'm not gonna knock their methods because I have no leg to stand on. Because I'm too unmotivated to join them.

Apathy's the problem and I'm part of it.

And Jubber, would your opinion be any different even if it were a "populist" movement? You've made it pretty clear in the past that despite your borderline poverty, you don't want to benefit from anything that would reduce a rich person's (which you'll never be) paycheck.

The 4chan Internet Superhero Forces Strike Team assembles on Wall Street to take down a "corrupt" stock market with billions of dollars worth of assets and lawyers and all that shit.

Next on News at 11, Johnny Jerkoff, a new up and coming 6th grade economist expert, will provide advice to President Obama via his video blog.

Stay tuned for results.

No, people are just as capable of being stupid in a group as they are as individuals (honestly, probably more capable), and this protest is fucking retarded. Their 'target' is nebulous, their stick is "we're not going away" (no one cares what they do), and they have no demands. They're fucking idiots, and should be disdained as such. My point was more that Aestu is wrong about this being the first white cap of a coming wave.

I don't want what is wrongfully taken from someone else (see what Weena said). I don't begrudge other people their success just because I haven't had a lot of my own in the last few years (and that's changing now). If people are building their wealth off of fraud and illegal acts, then we have options for dealing with them (Madoff). The difference here is that you have a bunch of well-to-do hypocrites with expensive toys mooching off their parents trying to preach to the rest of us about right and wrong. Fuck them. I'd say they're no different than the people they're protesting, except that no one has any fucking idea who they're protesting because they haven't been specific about why they're there. I think this in large part due to the fact that why they're there is more about them "being cool" and making themselves feel good about themselves than it actually is about fixing anything.
