Assuming you had to choose a belief system that most closely identifies your values and beliefs, what would that belief system be?

I identify most closely with and consider myself a Naturalistic Pantheist. Pantheism's usage of the word 'god' is not a metaphysical reference to a bearded man in the clouds. If a word exists, a definition must also exist for that word. Words can have multiple definitions, therefore Pantheism's definition of the word god does not refer to a Creator responsible for existence, it implies that existence is the result of the laws of physics and nature.

I'm curious to hear what others might say. I do not believe in a deity, I do not believe in the supernatural. I do not believe in the practice of worship. My religion, if one can call it that, is an appreciation for the world and the Universe around us.

I'm an atheist, and nothing short of god itself telling me it exists (with other credible witnesses in attendance, as well as a demonstration of his omnipotence) will change that.

So if I had to choose a religion, I'd pick based on how cool it sounded: Zoroastrianism.

Also, they're not all that strict and they really dig fire. Plus they have interesting practices regarding disposal of the dead.

Taken off wiki:

Quote:
"The religion states that active participation in life through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds is necessary to ensure happiness and to keep chaos at bay."

I can dig it, apart from the Mazda used superpowers to create the Universe mumbojumbo not mentioned in the quote.

ITT: Tuhl doesn't think Scientology or Jehovah's Witness sounds cool :(

I'd start my own cult before i beleived anyone else's bullshit

I thank my parents everyday for not filling my head with made up bullshit. Although they still made me do my bar mitzvah which was an utter waste of time.

I'd follow the gods of cunning brutality and brutal cunning.

Depending on my mood, either Buddhism or theistic Satanism.

Buddhism doesn't require belief in any higher power at all, which is what makes it so appealing to me aside from its rituals. Its focus on being a moral person outshines that of Christianity, and if you were to do something insignificant but immoral as a Buddhist, you wouldn't be condemned to an eternity of fire and brimstone. You'd just get another chance to un-fuck your chances at reaching nirvana after death. It's as if you're in a modern video game with unlimited lives at your disposal to finally complete a given task. Not many other religions preach that.

Theistic Satanism isn't exactly the most friendly religion, but it's one of the coolest. To sum it up, theistic (i.e. literal) Satanists interpret Satan and his commanded demons as aliens who had come to Earth and colonized the planet thousands of years ago. They had, according to this philosophy, been worshiped as gods by the Sumerians, Egyptians and others of the polytheistic era. But with the rise of monotheism through Zoroastrianism and Judaism, their reputations were smeared in favor of one singular, omnipotent god, and this eventually led to the semi-modern view of "the Devil" in Christianity and evil in general among the religious. Theistic Satanists follow a lot of LaVey's principles on morality and the human spirit, though they're obviously much more literal in their "understanding" of why we're here. Oh, and they also believe that Jews are descendants of an ancient reptilian race that was at odds with Satan's, so the religion attracts a lot of neo-Nazis.

Don't get me wrong, they're both obviously bullshit, but there are a lot of cool aspects to each, particularly the mythology of the latter. But like Tuhl, until there's concrete evidence supporting any theistic claim, I'll stick to trusting in the scientific method.

I actually like the sound of Theistic Satanism.

For me personally though I think it'd have to be Islam. I want 70 virgins waiting for me in the afterlife. Also, I'd like to justify treating women like property through the guise of religion.

To be fair, there's nothing in Islamic scripture that actually states that there'll be 72 virgins as a reward for martyrdom, nor is there anything justifying the treatment of women as property. It's all based on the past few centuries of revision within the Islamic community.
