And the purpose of limiting the power of institutions is to limit the number of poor decisions.

If I had leprosy, I'd rely on myself and the kindness of other people.

Serious Question: How blackhearted do the lot of you think the average citizen is?

Stupidity is more dangerous than malice.

Anarchy doesn't work because nature abhors a vacuum. If there is a power vacuum, it will be filled sooner or later, one way or the other.

"I disregard reality and substitute my own."

That is what this amounts to. We tried that. For a long time. It didn't just not work, it never worked, quite the contrary, lepers were invariably, without exception, stigmatized and discriminated against and stoned and exiled for no rational reason, merely the pure stigma and hideousness of the disease. Right up to our own lifetimes and the deeds of Mother Teresa.

But in the here and now those who "got theirs" are sheltered from the realities of the world by the very laws and institution they like to pretend don't benefit them at all. It's the social equivalent of Dunning-Kreuger syndrome.

Yea the whole "I'd rely on the kindness of others and myself" thing is noble in intent, but laughable in reality.

The rational reason lepers were exiled to colonies was that it was a communicable disease that to this day has no cure, that made you look like a monster while slowly crippling you. Given that medicine wasn't what it is now, it's hardly what can be described as an irrational response. When AIDS became an issue in the early 80s, the exile/colony idea was seriously suggested before the scientific community had enough time to determine how it was transmitted...it's standard human practice to do shit like that when we have no idea what the fuck is going on.

Leprosy is not communicable. It's a superstitious practice, and the very fact that you fixate on the hideousness of the disease underlines my point: human behavior is not rational. You talk about the human response to leprosy as if it was logical, including the stoning and exiling them to environments that were chosen for their unpleasantness (e.g., Devil's Island).

My point stands. There is such a thing as a "no-win" scenario. Only the sheltered believe that personal initiative and charity can solve all problems.

Although the mode of transmission of Hansen's disease remains uncertain, most investigators think that M. leprae is usually spread from person to person in respiratory droplets.

Maybe you should call the CDC and tell them it's not communicable, touting your credentials as internet know-it-all.

You should probably stop adopting all your philosophical points-of-view from Star Trek.

And only an idiot believes that because they can't solve "all" problems, that they shouldn't be the default for solving problems until they've proven ineffective.

Well, if I do somehow get leprosy, I know two people I can rob who won't care.

You won't get much from me, you're better off robbing Aestu.

Seriously though. Let's assume that we go on a system which 'relies on ourselves and the kindness of others.'

Let's suppose that 'the kindness of others' isn't very kind at all. In fact, no one honestly gives two shits and a flying fuck. So then what do you do? Nothing? Do whatever you can to survive while still respecting other's right to life and property?

What makes you think all of America would do that?

Imagine 'rely on myself and the kindness of others' is the new policy. Imagine a large portion of America, say 30% is afflicted with some strange viral condition. Is the 'kindness of others' going to save them? Or 'fuck them, because 'stealing' (taxing) people is wrong' will be a much better solution.

Libertarians must be lucid dreamers, because they are dreaming that everyone else around them are dreaming as well.

If a virus broke out, i'm sure people would look for a cure, even if they didn't have it, so that they don't get it.

I understand your point, though.

black people?

just kidding.

aids is what, blood and sexually transmitted? easily preventable for the people who are actually in power(read: the rich) to avoid getting. and if they DO get it, its manageable(see magic johnson)

I was more referring to the "relying on the goodness of others" people. the powerful are the ones that can give more help, and the poor are probably the ones with the rhetorical virus.

If a widespread virus were introduced in the United States in a libertarian society where everyone 'relies on themselves and the help of others', given that not everyone agrees with libertarian philosophy, whether in practice or in principle, widespread chaos would result.

Look at the New Orleans Hurricane Katrina situation. 'Rely on yourself and the help of others'. Yeah, that worked out real well even with government involvement.

if they were relying on themselves they might have had the sense to get the fuck out of a below sea level city.

its not like the hurricane snuck up on them.
