Trying to make a video game that emulates real life is like trying to make a carpet that emulates grass.

Realistic graphics are a fool's errand. Greater complexity always means greater unreliability, and the more realistic the visage, the more the imperfections stand out. The closer the game comes to reality, the more flawed and imperfect the game itself must be, because the mechanics of the game will always be at odds with what plausible reality is like.

Video games should create a distinct alternative to realism. This is why the WoW art style is so ingenious and successful.

I don't see the point of this sort of thing, I'm not interested, and it's just a cash siphon so producers can make banal, overpriced games with more automated texturing than human creativity.

I wish they spent that much effort on gameplay and writing.

the garfix were a selling point of the game back in 07 when it came out, but it was still a good game unlike the shit you're talking about, aestu, elsewise i agree with you entirely.

this is just a group of modders pushing the detail even further to see what they can do with it and how possible it is. i just find it laughable that a 5 year old game is still the best looking thing due to the laziness of devs, and more then likely won't change because the majority of the population is playing on 8 year old hardware in an age where it evolves as fast as it does.

i'm fine with games not being photorealistic, but the fact that there isn't a game that does it after Crysis pushed the limits 5 years ago is stupid.

i'll give you writing. but just because crysis 2 sucked doesn't mean the first one did. i'd go on and do a PC MASTER RACE LOL CONSOLE FAGS RUIN ANOTHER GAME, but it's way too early for that.

This.

Also, my Dad called this when I first got my NES system. He told me in a few years, (a few meaning 15+) games will look indiscernible from real life, or at least very close.

I was like:

I want to know why there isn't ultra-realistic CGI porn.

I could easily see "campaigns", "DLCs", and "characters" being applied to porn variables, "settings", "scripts", "actors". A new setting, a new script, a new actor, for $50, $50, $100 respectively, freely interchangeable by the world engine.

It's an interesting question, really, considering how technology has historically been sex-driven, and rarely have people been loath to apply technology to sexual demands.

Existentially, why doesn't it exist? I am really and truly curious what the causal reason is.

Aestu: Rule 34

And my dad said very close. He knows it will never completely be inseparable in distinction.

He's a computer nerd heh, guess that's where I get it from. He has a pretty good idea of the limits for technology in our lifetimes.

Edit: just for you Aestu

That's not what I meant at all.

I meant simple, mainstream, hyperrealistic porn on the level of what is done with actual human actors and actresses.

Like the Virtual Sex series 20 years ago, but using not only the latest CGI technology (a la Simone), but also the latest scenario-building and dynamic modeling technology (a la Fallout).

It doesn't exist. I wonder why.

just annoying really. gaming hasn't came as far as it should have for the past half decade or so, and with it being my main hobby, it's pretty frustrating. it's always been about making money, but now that's all it is. game devs don't care because people eat shit and love it. i love seeing some of these interviews from E3 and such where the devs sound almost bored talking about their games. just pissed at the current state i guess. at least I have Dota 2.

only reason i really linked the video though, is that i think the things modders do is awesome.

Link was mainly for lulz I know that's not what you meant.

I don't think it exists to the level of complexity you described but I know cgi porn exists.

Huge market potential for whoever makes 'porn video games'.

Wtb porn version of guitar hero.

I agree with this. However, I think that we will eventually have the technology to get very very very verrrrry close to reality in terms of graphics. So much so that the imperfections wouldn't be easily detectable.
