Isn't the point of a Halloween costume to be scary? Holocaust victims are scary.

When the new pope was elected and there was a big to-do about the fact that he was a hitler youth I dressed up as a pope with the miter and cane, all red with swastikas.

It went over pretty well.

See that's topical and clever...different than dressing up as one of the most evil fucks ever to walk the planet.

Political Correctness is a handicap.

I'm not saying you should tell the president to his face that he's "your nigga" but c'mon. There's a difference between being respectful and being absolutely terrified that you'll offend some group of people somewhere when your words are taken out of context.

Agreed, but there certainly still exists a line between Politically Correct and Disrespectful.

This beaner and the ad are clearly being politically correct.

In Mayo's examples I think dressing like Hitler would qualify as disrespectful.

Basically if White Supremacists do it seriously, then it might be over the line.

Most of the people I see bashing the idea of political correctness don't grasp the concept that being PC is situational, and have opinions that are borderline racist at best.

Ahh, but that's what it's really all about, isn't it? Suppressing freedom of opinion.

Standards are the point. If the situation is close friends who are known for bawdy humor, their standards and the situation means being PC is unimportant.

You don't get stoned for not being pc, they don't throw you in jail. You receive social punishment based on the standards and situation. There is no suppression of opinion that is not a choice made by he who holds the opinion. If not wanting to be seen as a racist keeps you from saying racist things you will still hold that opinion, but you will not share it (being pc) for fear of the social backlash. The argument against being PC amounts to wanting to say whatever ignorant shit comes out of your mouth and not be held socially responsible for your actions.

So in other words, mob rule.

It adds up to the same thing which is tyranny, undermining the freedoms of a minority because you are biased against it.

You disapprove of social stigmas against people of certain races, single mothers or the disabled. Social stigmas are great, though, when they corroborate your own biases. Funny how that works, isn't it?

How is that different than discrimination based on race or religion?

You can be a member of a race or hold a religious belief, just don't try to participate in society.

Are you neuroses becoming too much for you? Your arguments are almost always off the mark to mask the incorrect opinions you argue, but you usually are at least in the ballpark. Lately what you post has no connection to what you quote.

Keep straw-manning my positions though, I realize you can't make an argument when you don't make things up about your opponent.

What did I falsely attribute to you? You just don't like that your views are manifestly hypocritical.

Nice strawman.

Being a member of a race or having a religious belief is not the same as being a racist hate monger. Someone with hateful beliefs towards a particular religion/race/nationality/whatever who expresses them in a disrespectful, often inflammatory manner should not be considered the same as someone who has positive beliefs and expresses them in a non-hate-fueled manner.

You realize this is the same line of reasoning that members of the Westboro Baptist Church use to explain why it's fine that they protest outside the funerals of dead soldiers, right?

They hide behind freedom of speech in order to deliver their backward messages to the world.

I guess you think this is okay then Aestu? I guess we should just let this exist and let hate mongers do whatever they want because we don't want tyranny?

Image

No, in reality I think it's great that society considers these people to be outcasts and fucking loonies. I think it's great that people take steps to keep them as far away from funerals as possible when they decide to throw their crazy bullshit around in public.

Dvergar is right, Political Correctness is all about context. It's a line that is not clearly drawn, but should be obvious in most situations.

-The mexican kid getting mad at that halloween costume is ridiculous and far too PC
-Dressing up like a holocaust victim is insensitive, wrong, and generally fucked up. The same as dressing as Hitler, Stalin, or any other mass murdering, evil fuck head with hateful beliefs.
