Ridiculously PC questions, with references to "women inventors", "the 'usefulness' of the Hispanic label", and other BS. The test requires the taker to identify race and ethnicity (the latter defined only as Hispanic/non-Hispanic). I said I was black and Hispanic. I think they inflate black scores on the subjective portion (which is now longer) to defeat accusations of discrimination.

I scored 710 on the subjective portion, relatively weak by internal standards. Oh well, hopefully good enough for my purposes.

As I walked up to the check-in counter, the receptionist, seemingly capable middle-aged black guy, said, "You look like you're going to war". What a funny remark. I was without words for a moment, then said the first thing that came to mind: "Well, I'm not here in the service of peace".

If I could do my SATs/College applications over I would have checked the "African-American" box on everything

iirc they can't challenge your racial identity for application purposes at the risk of being considered racist...I've always wondered what would have happened, perhaps i would have gotten into The Wharton School of Business at Penn had I not identified myself as white.

I bet they would have gotten super pissed when they met me though.

If you can have a penis and say you feel like a woman and have society just be all awww how sweet, you should be able to do the same for race.

Everyone who goes through that Nihonphile phase identifies as Japanese, but I honestly think Arthur can uniquely lay claim to affiliation with that culture.

This would be a great argument to have. Check African American on every box. When they try to call you out you can destroy their argument by the fact that whether you believe in the religious version of how humans were created or the scientific version, Africa was the cradle of civilization for millions of years. So yes, we are all from Africa at some point in our lineage. When they wipe the puzzled looks away you can take your discounted education and walk away as a proud African-American.

I was trying to Google around to see if there has ever been a case of a white person claiming African-American to gain admission to a selective university and couldn't come up with anything.

I feel like someone somewhere must have tried it.

I knew a south african guy(white dude) who could legally say he was african american.

due to having been born there or something.

"so where are you from"

"America"

"well yeah but like where is your history"

"America"

"yeah i know but like whats your culture"

"American"

I can't count the number of times I've had that conversation.

For those boxes I always check Other and then Hispanic/Latino since I don't identify myself as any of the other choices. Though technically I guess it'd be down to White or Native.

That's why I usually ask people who are obviously of American-born parents, "What culture are you from?" I don't even bother asking, "Where are you from?", or "What's your nationality?" although, "Where were your parents from?" might be a better line of questioning.

Honestly I just like phrasing it, "What culture are you from?" because that naturally implies that, "I'm just asking because I'm looking to improve myself. I want to add your knowledge and experience to my own, and to adapt your culture to service my ends."

I check "caucasian" when there's only the like four standard boxes, and "other" when they throw in all the extra ethnicities they feel have to be added to be all-inclusive, at which point I write in "French" on the blank line next to "other."

I don't think those boxes have ever affected me, positively or negatively.

they're not supposed to alter the outcomes in any way shape or form. they're SUPPOSED to be for survey reasons. we don't have many X people applying to our company, what can we do to improve that, sort of thing.
