I work at Jersey Mike's. If you don't have one near you, it's an expensive sub shop. We charge $8 for a regular sized sub (6-7 inches). We put thin slices of meat on your sub and handfuls of lettuce to make you think you got a good deal. Fountain drinks are near $2 for soft drinks that are worth cents. By now, you get the point.

Everybody is aware that restaurants have a sanitation score. The previous score was a 100.0 and our present score is a 96.0 (somebody left a drink on the front line). I understand that corporate enjoys flaunting a perfect sanitation score, but when shift lead employees get anal about it, it doesn't make any sense to me. You're getting paid $9.50 (2 bucks more than me, because I'm just a regular employee making minimum) and you think the floor needs to be spotless?

Every sunday night we deck brush. This involves moving all of the tables and chairs to one side of the store, sweeping, mopping, using a hard brush to get the tiny specs in between the floor panels, and then mopping again.

Tonight, my shift lead bitched at me because I didn't brush the corners. She threatened to write me up (empty threat because it was the second time). I understand sweeping and mopping. I even understand brushing where people often step because they leave black marks, but when you want me to spend a half hour brushing corners of the store where nobody walks, and where the health inspector doesn't check, I assume you're flexing your power to order me around.

tl;dr - Bitch with a power complex wants to tell me to work harder for my minimum wage.

Brushing corners is important. If you do not brush corners it will attract dust and fruit flies. It's true in a house and it's more true in a restaurant. It's not hard, and it's part of doing a simple job well.

Welcome to working for a corporate restaurant chain. At red lobster they don't allow you to bring any sort of drink back into the kitchen, up to the point where they'll throw away any sort of bottled water or whatever that you bring and store in the walk-in.

Eating or drinking in a food prep area is both bad practice and unlawful.

And everyone in every kitchen everywhere does it.

The health department doesn't give a shit about it.

And, you'd be one of the worst cooks EVER if you didn't try the food on your line while you were cooking it.

Really looking forward to Aestu explaining to me why I should wear a hairnet as opposed to my bandana and how I should get a new pair of gloves for literally every single different type of food I touch.

EDIT: If I'm working pantry, how the hell am I supposed to know if sauces and cold apps need to be changed out if I don't taste them to see if they're off?

Because hair in food is disgusting and no one has any idea where that bandana has been

Because little bits of one kind of food in another is disgusting (and can also cause lawsuits due to allergy)

You're changing your question - going from asking about food and drink you brought in, to tasting food for practical reasons. In answer to your latter phrasing: put dates on the boxes and go by the policy. If you still don't know, ask whoever's in charge.

I really shouldn't be surprised you're arguing with the people who, you know, work in restaurants, about working in restaurants.

Fuck gloves. I never wear them in pantry unless I'm handling beets.

That's not very practical to go about asking a supervisor every time you need to know if something is fresh. Oh and labeling jars, boxes, and containers is silly when they come and go quickly.

A minimum wage job at a fast food restaurant or chain is not comparable to a situation where professionals are responsible for their own judgement.

I definitely can understand why that shit is annoying, because yes...they don't pay you nearly enough to give that much of a fuck. Also, your boss is probably a power hungry bitch.

However, to be fair...if she's breathing down your neck, she's probably got bosses breathing down HER neck as well.

Getting that 96.00 instead of a 100.00 rating probably resulted in her getting her ass chewed out.

Unfortunately, it's just how the chain of command goes. If she's flipping out at you, it's most likely because she's got someone on her ass about the same thing.

Wow, exactly how I feel. "They don't pay me nearly enough to give this much of a fuck" was exactly what I was thinking all during close. And you're right. She's my age, 19, with a couple years at the place. Her only valid reason for getting on me is for a probable inspection coming up.

Still, we lost points over other things. Another 1.5 lost was from another employee coming in from a smoke break and immediately go to making subs. Leaving an open container (drink) on the frontline.

Never from an unkept floor. BUT NOOOOOOOO! Gotta scrub the floor til it shines, customers like that shit. I should start a corporate version of "X? Bitches love x"

$9.50... look for a better job every day bro. I make $12.50 and I'm always looking.

Get somewhere else that trains useful skills. I've become forklift and order selector licensed at no cost to myself as well as gained experience with those machines. I work for Lowes. I am a grunt and make $12.50.

Get the fuck out of there as quickly as you can. It's a tough job market, and I mean that with the highest degree of respect.

I'm not gonna work here the rest of my life, but for now it pays the bills between what I make and what my girlfriend brings in.
