Gasp! You mean not only are governments corrupt, but the "free" market is equal slavery?

Dear Santa,

By Jove, they may have figured it out! This Christmas, I'll take that thing we talked about that time.

Thanks.

You're wrong because Ron Paul would never lie to me. So what if a large portion of his personal holdings are in gold, which would explode in price to a ludicrous amount if we switched to the gold standard? Ron Paul wants to switch to the gold standard because Ron Paul is never wrong.

Yet there's still competitors to buy from, and both brands produce caffeine free pop.

Now you're just being a shithead. I could say the opposite about you, that no matter what Dr. Paul says, you think he's wrong.

Dr. Paul is wrong on a number of things. A gold standard probably has the soundest money possible, but it has some big downsides. A lot of people invest in gold for it's stability. Maybe he sees this, and would like to see this same stability come to the US currency. Who knows besides Dr. Paul? Now if he is posed to get the gold standard through, and decides to buy as much gold as he can, then I would accept wholeheartedly a huge character flaw. How it appears now certainly should raise questions and create suspicion. But to write him off as it stands is to write him off because one is jumping at every reason to write him off.

Your best argument for stiff regulation so far has been a character jab that may or may not be warranted.

Paul owns a lot of gold, wants to move to the gold standard, which would make him a lot of money. What an asshole.

Gore owns a lot of green energy stuff, wants to move to green energy, which would make him a lot of money. What a paragon of virtue.

So they only have an ulterior motive when they disagree with you?

I never said Gore didn't have ulterior motives. The main difference between the two is that one is actually feasible and helps people while the other one would probably fuck up the economy.

I agree that the gold standard would be messing with the economy, but I'm not sharp enough on economics to guess whether it would be good or bad.

I just seem to remember everyone around here sucking gore's dick over his green energy as if he was a selfless savior of humanity, when he's just as corrupt as anyone else. If you plan to make a bundle of money on something, I'm less inclined to trust you when you try to sell it to me.

Maybe you're right and green energy can't be trusted. Mind sharing some negative consequences that could happen if we shift away from things like coal and fossil fuels to forms of energy like biofuel, geothermic, and wind?

I'm not saying we should stick with fossil fuels, that's obviously unsustainable, but not every green idea has been a step in the right direction. I can't remember what nation it is over in europe, but they had millions in wind energy, and the upkeep of the fans compared to the output really isn't worth it.

I'd rather we move into solar power. that's a much more dependable and cost efficient resource than wind.

The point is that one man's greed will create more sustainable ways of energy while another man's greed may fuck up the economy. You tell me which one is better.

If gore gets a better offer from a bad step in the name of the green movement, he'll take it. his greed MAY get us where we should go, but it may not.

I'm just curious - what about fiat currency makes you think it's so great?

I mean, the system we have now.... working as intended, right?

Truthfully, like everything else, we're fucked no matter which way we go. Having currency backed simply by confidence has its own issues, just like having it backed by Gold would.

Also, the US has been lying about how much gold it has for years. Fort Knox is probably empty.

We're fucked.

Because it's rational. Currency is by its very nature by fiat. Currency is a means of exchange that has value and meaning only within the human mind. It makes sense to define currency purely in terms of its value a means of exchange - the value of the economy - than some random mineral. Gold is neither central to our economy nor is the amount in existence fixed or inelastic. Thus, pinning the currency to gold is fundamentally irrational.

Good currency management is like any other kind of resource management. It can be done well or poorly. Running the currency is an error no different than squandering natural resources or running the economy into the ground. Merely because some people manage resources badly doesn't negate the possibility or need to do so well.

EDIT: Putting it more simply: How does it make sense for all industries related to a particular rock to suddenly become high-capital, the pursuit of that rock to become a matter of the most serious importance, for all things connected to that rock to consume a disproportion of our energy and resources, just because we happen to use that rock as currency?

Aestu of Bleeding Hollow...

Nihilism is a copout.

Good point. Perhaps we should be on a fiat based currency. The challenge is managing it well though, which I don't think is possible in with these current governments/economies.
