It's not as if it comes as a surprise. Still, I'd like to think that with this will come a regime change for the better and hopefully a wave of modernization akin to what's happened with China since the Cultural Revolution, albeit with a smaller population to work with and thus a greater chance of general success. There's also probably a lot of classified information --- on both sides, really --- that's been tucked away since the Cold War era in regard to North Korea, so this change in leadership just might end up unearthing a treasure trove of cultural and political intelligence that most have been unable to study in a climate of potential war.

Thoughts, FUBU?

Won't change anything.

He left behind a son who will be the puppet monarch, with real power in the hands of the army and secret police. These guys are quite happy with the status quo and have everything to gain from keeping things as they are and everything to lose from change. They aren't going to support glasnost or unification. If anything this will strengthen their hand because without Kim they'll be able to at least manage the country a bit more effectively, prolonging the regime's lifespan.

The elite, and their children, are firmly behind the regime. Most Korea experts believe it will take another generation for real change to come to the DPRK. I am inclined to agree.

Hopefully his son isn't as insane as Kim Jong-Il was though I doubt it.

His son comes off as kind of a coddled dimwit. Another Nicholas II.

Funny, that's actually a great comparison. Given that word of revolution in the US and Middle East will undoubtedly spread to North Korea in full force within the coming months --- if it hasn't already, though if it has I doubt most there have been given the full story --- then it's entirely possible that a revolution there could topple the existing regime. After all, the North Korean military and police use incredibly outdated technology, with a solid chunk of their weaponry having been produced in the '60s. If outside nations were to fund/supply a revolution and oust the existing aristocratic dictatorship, Korea could be reunified and West-East relations would improve, particularly with China. It's a win/win.

Word won't spread. North Koreans live in a literal vacuum. As much as we talk about how terrible it is that China or the [insert autocratic Middle East regime] or Iran (or, if SOPA passes, the USA) restricts information, it's nothing compared to North Korea. No one knows anything, and anyone who isn't in the army is too busy starving to be mad or even ask questions. You can't be emboldened or inspired by popular revolts overseas when you don't know that said revolts have happened.

on what tuhl said, they are pretty much taught that white people are the devil and that if they touch one their skin will burn. It's fucked and unification or a revolution would only be bad news for the world politically even if it is good news humanitarianly.

Eventual revolt is still entirely possible, though. Should Kim Jong-un manage to piss off the wrong member(s) of the aristocracy --- which, by the way, is allowed access to the outside world --- in the future, he'll likely end up being faced with a military coup orchestrated by those aristocrats who oppose his rule. In turn, the dictatorship will topple and half of the remaining Bamboo Curtain, the other half surrounding Burma, will fall, thus allowing for a greater Western influence on Korean culture and politics.

One can only hope that the West has learned from its mistakes in regard to the formation of the USSR, though. Indifference to North Korea can only lead to something much worse than an insane but inept autocracy.

Not only was Kim the best golfer on the face of the planet, but he also invented the hamburger. RIP.

i read a story once about a north korean refugee who was interviewed in china after escaping. she described that her job for the government was to pick up propaganda that had been air-dropped into NK by the south koreans and US as part of psych warfare. she was told by her supervisors that she needed to use a stick or tongs to pick up the pamphlets because if they touched her skin, the contact would wither and kill the affected area. she believed this with total conviction.

you think some new dude (who's presumably just as insane as his father, who was just as insane as HIS father) can repel that magnitude of brainwashing?

Verily, I have often laughed at weaklings who thought themselves proud because they had no claws.
