What's a good red wine between 35-50 a bottle and widely available (something I could drive a short time to get)?

Holy fuck, 35-50 a bottle?

I'll recommend you the best wine you'll ever find for 15 bucks. It's called Saumur (Domaine Filliatreau, Chateau Fouquet), and the tag on the bottle will look like

so now you know what you're looking for. Year isn't particularly important, if they have 2010 buy that because you'll know it's not past its prime.

If you really have to be spendy, I suggest a St. Julien. Chateau Lagrange should be an affordable type of St. Julien, if you can find it. Year matters a bit more, so be wary if they've got some from 2010 (or even 2009). By which I mean it should be older.

35-50 was the price range that was agreed on.

So maybe I'll go with a couple bottles of something, which for some reason didn't occur to me until now.

Got a good white wine that would legitimately get me there?

What is this for? Are you pairing it with something? Just drinking? I have a thing for California reds and Spanish wines (and anything from the Nebbiolo variety). Alsacian Reislings are great food wines, and good drinking whites. Morgan makes an amazing Cote du Rhone style Grenache/Shiraz blend for 16-18 a bottle.

Is an amazing dry bottle of bubbles for crazy cheap. Become a standard for me and my roommates these past few weeks.

I'm less of a white drinker, but there I'll suggest a Muscadet Sèvre et Maine. I can't really narrow it down past that, but just make sure the bottle isn't too old because white usually doesn't age gracefully.

(Ignore any suggestion Zaryi makes about non-French wine, unless it's Chilean red, which is acceptable)

It's for a gift.

I'll be going to a specialty place and asking around, I wrote down some suggestions, though they don't show up on the shops website. So we'll see.

Any rule of thumbs? Should I be looking for newer vintages generally?

Do they have a good cellar to store something for a while? Are they going to drink it immediately? are they adverse to a dessert won't?

I'll link a few of my favorite bottles when I get home.

It would be consumed within a year.

I know he drinks red wine just to drink.

And he's married.

So I was thinking a good red wine that's good on it's own and maybe a white wine he and his wife could have with or after a meal.

Maybe buy a decent bottle for $15-25 along with some nice cheese/chocolate that goes along with it?

I mean it in that he drinks wine alone, without food.

I drink beer just to drink beer, and there's some fancy beers that I don't like. I can't even force Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale down. From a beer noob's perspective, that sounds like a pretty awesome choice.

In any case, the fellow at the store recommended Chateau Ste Michelle 08 Merlot and Centine 08 Toscana, because he didn't have one's I wrote down.

Yeah I'm not too surprised, I'm spoiled by choice in NYC wine stores. If you happen to know that the guy giving recommendations isn't a moron, his stuff is probably worth checking out.
