Someone was either a boring child or they've forgotten everything they did when they were 12.

His dad has to work and the kid is off school for the next 3 weeks. I can only handle Disneyland so many days in a row with 4 kids :p

Got any suggestions? I'm seriously a professional student, I've been studying GRE vocab words just for fun on my "break" ~.~ I love learning.

If you're going to discuss on FUBU, I'd suggest:

The Art of War by Sun Tzu

The Comedy of Errors by William Shakespeare

Arguing With Idiots by Glenn Beck

BOOM! OMNI-ROASTED!

Thanks :] I don't know that I'll really argue on FUBU, but I want to be educated in politics anyway, it's my weakest area and I feel irresponsible as a voter.

Personally, I see politics through the lens of history. So my recommendation is to read books about world history. You would be amazed how many cultures have had to deal with the same problems that we think are new and unique.

Penguin translations are the best, imo - very readable yet rich language. Don't buy dumbed-down "new translations".

Some of my favorites:
History of the Peloponnesian War
Livy's History of Rome
Agricola
A Distant Mirror
The Guns of August

Books about America:
The Jungle
Theodore Rex
The Autobiography of Malcolm X
Unsafe At Any Speed
The Pentagon Papers

Books about government:
The Prince
Napoleonic Ideas

I'll think of more later. Suffice to say, that's a lot of material. I find it best to try to build an understanding larger than the sum of its parts.

I firmly believe that there is no such thing as good contemporary writing, least of all about history or politics. Nothing can possibly be written that transcends the biases and myopia of the present day, especially given the herd mentality that prevails in modern political thought.

And, uh, Glenn Beck is garbage. Just saying.

The only way to understand the present is to learn about the past.

Duh.

When I saw the book on the shelf, my first thought was "He's arguing with himself? No, that can't be right, because he used the plural of idiot. Maybe Glenn Beck has multiple personality disorder. I bet that's it. I bet Mr. Beck's mind is one smart guy being drowned out by twelve idiots."

Joke was fine. She's overly sensitive.

the joke WAS fine, but it bombed when he used it.

half of telling a joke is reading the audience. It's why i don't tell abortion jokes at church. or go to church.

You should start by having a firm grasp on the Constitution. Seems basic, but it's quite surprising how many people don't.

One of my favorite political figures in history was Benjamin Franklin. He has a way with words that is both eloquent as well as humorous. You can't go wrong with Ben Franklin.

I'd just like to note that Il Principe was written with the intent of satirizing the sometimes tyrannical Medici rule of the time, and thus shouldn't be taken as seriously as some of the other listed works. Machiavelli, after all, favored a republic, but was only (legally) allowed to write what favored the common Italian despot.
