My 8800GTX needs new thermal paste and I should probably upgrade the power supply to resolve its overheating issues.

While I wait on that, I'm using an old 8400GS I have laying around. How much can it be safely overclocked to get the most out of it?

So finally I said, "f this", and just got some thermal paste, cleaned the sink off and reapplied fresh paste. Still running hot. I manually set the card fan to 100% spee and I clocked the core down to 195MHz. Still cooking at 76C.

-_-

What's normal for these cards, anyway? I have a 550W PSU and I'm not running like a RAID setup or anything else that would drain a lot of power. What gives?

Sounds like PSU may be too low wattage, and I'm not sure if you have room to accommodate another fan, but you might look into that as well if you do.

You either need more fans, a liquid cooling solution, or don't overclock the card so hard. You could try some combination of any of those and it might help. It also might be letting you know it's getting ready to give up the ghost.

When I put my new machine together this spring, I'm definitely going to do something with linked video cards. I'll probably also set up RAID, now that I have some experience with it, and an SSD for quick boot-ups. I can't believe you don't have a crossfire set-up, as much as you play online.

I wasn't ever overclocking the card. I'm now underclocking it, actually. It does seem to be helping.

It's definitely possible the card's fans have seen better days. The card itself is still pretty good, so I plan on buying the custom Thermaltake fins. I keep my WoW directory on an SSD, my documents on an external hard disk, and my OS and other programs on a third, internal HD.

I'm not into power computing. Partly by inclination and partly by limited means, I am very reliant on improvisation and scrounging for parts. Even if I had the cash to get a RAID array and SLI setup, I simply don't see the point. WoW isn't technically demanding, and I don't play many contemporary games because I think they're mostly overpriced trash.

76C is fine, what was it at before? For some reference, my AMD 6870 runs at 80-85C using stock cooling.

I'm amazed you even have a SSD.

It was at 80-81 and crashing due to heat. Why does my having a SSD surprise you?

The entire last paragraph is why. SSD isn't exactly standard or cheap.

What does "standard" mean? It's useful, especially in a game with as many load screens and as reliant on HD access as WoW.

And it's not expensive either...I got mine for like $100. It only needed to be big enough for WoW.

I think I have about 20 second load screen at the beginning, and 10 second loads after that.

With a 6 year old HDD at 7200rpm.

Probably cost 50 more than your SDD (because 6 years ago) and probably still has 4-5 times the space.

But hey, buy what you want.

"You think". Okay. FRAPS or stopwatch or something. Whatever.

Either way I get the best of both worlds because I have my OS on a conventional drive with all the space I need. And I get the additional benefit of being able to pick up my WoW files and move them right to my laptop or any other PC should the need arise.

I get more functionality, better performance, more mobility, and as much space as your configuration. What's the problem?

$100 SSD is 40-60GB of space which is incredibly small in today. The only people who get them are those with money to spend. And as you said "I am very reliant on improvisation and scrounging for parts. Even if I had the cash to get a RAID array and SLI setup, I simply don't see the point. WoW isn't technically demanding," they do not go together.

5.59 sec Desktop -> Login
19.08 sec First Load Screen
8.65 sec Intracontinental Load
10.37 sec Intercontinental Load

How big is a SSD in terms of physical size? Finger-size, Half a Forearm?

You got 250 gigs for 100 bucks? Because that would be beyond a steal.

I don't have a stopwatch handy. I can definitely say my times are faster. WoW launch is basically instant for me.

2.5" form factor. About 2.5"x1"x4".

That's pretty much market price. Besides, what do you need 250GB for?

Unless you're using Goodwill market prices, the actual market price for an SSD drive is about $100/60GB. Check Newegg.com if you don't believe that.

As for needing all the space...
20GB for Windows 7 (Assuming we're talking 64-bit and using the system requirement specs.)
30GB for WoW (Roughly, with the 4.03 patch... not sure what it is, now.)
84GB of Music
62GB of Photos and Home Movies
26GB of Miscellaneous Shit (Sheet music, e-books, scanned receipts, fonts and photoshop brushes, source code, contracts, etc.)
12GB for StarCraft 2

That's 234GB of my total HD space, which is a 1TB local drive... but I actually have most of my images, music and miscellaneous on a 1TB Raid 1 Network Storage Drive so it can be shared between all computers in my homegroup.

Granted, you probably won't have 62GB of photos because you don't have family or friends... so...
