I don't feel like following it up for sources. That said, Greece is in no position to cover any more people with its disability policies, what with having roughly negative infinity euros in the national treasury.

It's not as irrational as it sounds.

Pedos and kleptos aren't usually evil people, they're people suffering from a severe psychopathology. Recidivism is so high because they really can't control themselves.

Making pedophilia and kleptomania disabilities has the benefit of keeping these people out of the way. Failing that, what would you have them do - institutionalize them? imprison them? let them roam outside the bounds of society?

Honestly, it is probably cheaper than any available alternative.

Pedophilia isn't like other disabilities. Its a danger. Lets not give them tax breaks and their own parking spaces.

Those are not the "accomodations" in question. The fact that these disabilities are dangerous is precisely why it is so important to keep these people out of the way.

No one is seriously going to be filing for disability status claiming to be a pedo or a klepto. No one is going to seriously think that the social stigma that comes with those labels is worth the perks.

What would you have done with these people, Usd?

well if convicted, i'd be happy to have them spend their lives in jail. if not convicted(and how else would you know they're a pedo?) then there's nothing to be done with them.

and people will always claim something if they think the benefit outweighs the negatives.

Just send the Pedos to prison. Everyone knows they are despised even by the most evil criminals.

The negatives in this case are pretty damn strong. The stigma for being a pedo is way, way stronger than the stigma for being a murderer. Besides, the law already allows people to legitimately claim disability benefits for all sorts of conditions that aren't as socially damaging as being a pedo. There are far easier disability conditions to declare fraudulently. Like I said, I don't see anyone claiming to be a pedo out of greed.

How would we know if they're a pedo, short of witnessing them molest a child? Simple. Ask them. No one who isn't a pedo would accept that kind of stigma. People who are, are in their own hell - they have to live with their fear and irresistible urges. I am not saying we should sympathize with them - merely understand that they have their own incentive to accept the stigma if it means avoiding a worse alternative: jail and/or homelessness.

The "benefits", ultimately, are for society. You seem to be arguing that jail is a more economical alternative. It's not. Putting someone in subsidized housing in a designated area far from families and children and providing them a stipend of $25k a year or something is far, far cheaper than prison...where there are guards, administration, security costs, the facilities, and of course the entire mess of lawyers involved in not only criminal proceedings but also the legal review inherent in long-term incarceration. Prison may afford the inmates an austere existence, but it's certainly not cheap for society.

You're acting on an urge to punish and not reward, but that's at odds with the strictly financial basis of your position here. You're saying you think we should spend more tax money for the political causes you identify with, even if it's hideously expensive and contrary to the interests of the country at large.

You do not realize it, but you are a part of the very problem that you identified in the topic of this thread.

I understand people fine. I understand well how the government spends more than it needs to because of political pressure driven by human nature.

The problem is that you fail to see how human nature drives your own attitudes and clouds your judgement at least as easily as it does everyone else.

I don't disagree that politicians will reject this idea as unpalatable. The problem is, your initial objection was driven by a perception of "waste". But that wasn't really the issue, was it? You just fell short of examining your own motives and understanding that the issue was really something else - "shame" - ...and as a result...you yourself are supporting the government spending more than it needs to.

Pedophiles are people who live with a problem. They can't resist the urge to do what they do. That, like I said, is why recidivism is so high. If they are presented with an easy option (welfare) and a hard option (jail/homelessness) they will take the easy way out given they face the stigma either way. Or do you not think that people tend to follow the path of least resistance?

The policy is sensible. I don't deny it will be "shut down" - not that because it isn't a sensible policy but because it won't survive politically. That, in turn, is because of foolish voters like you who think that it's every other cow in the herd that stinks.
