I was only advocating jail for the people convicted of a crime, and was very specific to that point.

And you can't help people by sweeping them under the rug, ASSUMING you can get them to volunteer to live in a "WE LIKE TO FUCK KIDS" community, because you sure as shit can't force them to live there.

Your entire idea is unpalatable to the masses and would never pass, so this entire argument is moot.

So you're saying that we should only let people be placed somewhere by force, and not voluntarily? How is that more humane?

I'm with Aestu on this one. The media sensationalizes the issue by comparing blindness and organ transplants to mental disorders, particularly pedophilia. It's not "either/or". The question is: Who is sick enough to warrant help from society? If pedophilia wasn't specifically listed in this story, would it even be a story? I don't think it would (look at all the headlines). Do you think that a disorder like pyromania would have triggered this outrage? I don't think it would. But, wouldn't you agree that a disorder like pyromania is more similar to pedophilia than different? I would, and yet, I think society would be more open to offering treatment to a pyromaniac than a pedophile. Why? Is it because, by definition, the victims of pedos are innocent kids? Pyros' victims are innocent and fires can hurt/kill kids, too. These people have terrible disorders. And yet, we can't allow them to act on their compulsions. What to do?

Unless we plan to start executing these people (and where would you draw the line on this slippery slope?), then we must get used to the cost of their existence whether that is in the form of incarceration, institutionalization or assistance. And, if these unavoidable costs can be mitigated without increasing the threat to society, I'd be for exploring that option. As for the risk of fraud, that's simply another unfortunate cost of civilization.

As a father of twins, I'm with Aestu and Boredalt as well.

Pedophilia is an illness. This is not subject to contention. 'Normal' people do not go around touching 5 year olds for sexual pleasure. It is an unfortunate flaw that some people in the adult human population exhibit.

I believe this would make places with children and families safer. I believe it would help to end the cycle of molestation on a large scale if widely implemented in more developed countries.

I can even see myself becoming pen pals of sorts and writing to them. People that would do this, the least I can do is thank them. It takes a lot of courage to do what is right, even more if you will be ridiculed for it.

The majority of pedophiles on the streets were victims themselves, don't discount that fact.

Simply put, if it means my children and others would be safer and less likely to encounter this, I am for it.

Just wanted to point out, this isn't actually true. I've heard it a number of times but there is no statistical proof that prior molestation increases the likelihood of offending as an adult. There are offenders who were abused when kids and did the same when they were adults, but it's not more likely than someone who wasn't abused.

In one anecdote, in response to the "pedophilia begets pedophilia" line of thought, a fellow claims that the opposite was true in his case.

In that, he felt loved by the pedophile who 'victimized' him, he attributes those events as part of the reason that he now prefers older men as an adult.
