We were discussing the term sheeple, which you SAID you've never heard, so I obviously wasn't talking about discussions I've had with people calling other people sheeple on THIS forum.

Shall I draw you a map?

If you say so. From what I see, the issues that are in fact important are also the ones you (and Weena and most other posters here) have most of a herd mentality about. Whenever discussion strays beyond those bounds you immediately go into "BRAIN HURTZ" mode.

Maybe crazy notions never gain much traction and fail to gain wide acceptance for a reason.

Like... maybe because they're crazy?

There's little question that some people agree with widely accepted notions without any real thought on the matter. Many widely accepted ideas have so many subscribers that it certainly seems that way. There's more I could say, but all of this is really irrelevant. The discussion was eesentially pertaining to why "sheeple" isn't a good term.

"Sheeple" is a douchy term because the person using it is automatically condescending, whether or not the person/people they are referring to are, indeed, "sheeple". It also ends up being a completely counterproductive term as well. Since virtually all uses of the term appear in the contexts of societal/political/etc discussions, virtually all uses end up causing such discussions to stop immediately. People are highly unlikely to listen to someone who is condescending, regardless of how correct or reasonable the argument is.

As you may have noticed, simply implying others around are sheeple has quickly degenerated the discussion from "why sheeple is a stupid term" to some kind of flyte. I have to wonder if this is all trolling. Considering people in this thread implied they don't like being called sheeple, and you then turned around and implied they were sheeple, I have to say it's entirely plausible.

Libertarianism and free-market nonsense would fit that category. Ideas that never gained acceptance - were never seen as anything but ignorant or insane - except amongst some Americans who know nothing of the world at large.

"Progressive" ideas are pretty tried and true. There's a whole history there that those who oppose the concept remain ignorant about. The herd mentality is the here and now in America: the belief that people can just kind of take care of themselves.

I agree the term is condescending and doesn't add much to a discussion. That isn't why it offends most people, though. It offends people because of cognitive dissonance.

I can't tell if he meant that, or if he's attempting to demonstrate the entire point of the thread through irony.

I do have to retract a bit.

I was my understanding that modern liberalism and progressivism were one and the same.

So I was wondering why someone would say they were progressive when they should simply say they are liberal.

The usage of the word "liberal" that is similar to "progressive" is not how it is used by Americans.

"Liberal" in the traditional sense means tending towards permissiveness or social freedom. Progressive, in the traditional sense, means reforming society and institutions with the goal of making things better. Ideas can be progressive without being liberal, or liberal without being progressive, although the two usually do go hand-in-hand as social freedom is generally considered a progressive ideal.

Americans use the word "liberal" to mean something else entirely which is a poorly defined collection of policies and attitudes that aren't necessarily progressive or liberal, and aren't associated what are traditionally thought of as "liberal" ideas.

Again, it's the herd mentality at work. Why the words "liberal" and "progressive" have come to mean - or rather be associate with - something so poorly defined and so at odds with the actual meanings of the word.

Herds usually don't have clearly defined ideas so much as vague attitudes and prejudices.

Sometimes progress is realizing you're going the wrong way and turning around.

Such a realization would imply a wider frame of reference, precluding most Americans.

I'd rather post super birth bowl day commercials in this thread, so segue from sheeple to shepherd dogs.

I've never sharted in my life. Then again, I don't fart around people.

EDIT: I think that because of this, I have the opposite of sharts. I think I have to take a huge shit, sit down on the toilet, and just fart a lot instead.

Googled it - and felt dirty just for typing her name in the search box, truth be told. She actually really doesn't look half bad without makeup. The orange skin tone doesn't do anything for her, I guess.

This, actually. Didn't know it referred to a person. God help us these people are rapturously watched by millions.
