What part of the government would the post office fall under? Executive?

Most likely executive...but how's the DMV get caught up in that? The DMV is operated by state governments, not the federal government.

It's the President of the United States. He has the toughest job in the world. Get off your high horse and just go. Just because he's willing to listen to everyone and is willing to at least try and appease everyone doesn't mean losers like Tim and Joe Wilson (the douche that called him a liar) can disrespect him.

I fucking hated Bush's presidency to the Nth degree. However, at the same time I would have punched that asshole who threw the shoes at him. If he invited me to the White House, not only would I drop everything I was doing and go, but I'd sincerely shake his hand and commend him for being able to do a job that I could never mentally or physically handle.

It's the fucking President for crying out loud. And the fact that it's Obama is a bonus. Just go you dickbutt. Again, I'm well aware that he was within his rights to refuse to go. That doesn't mean it was the right thing to do, and yes it does mean he is a douchebag.

Some people like Jubber like to make parallels between American and Roman history - about common mistakes.

The Romans took their political institutions very seriously. The Romans definitely believed that short of treason, a political office deserved respect because it was bigger than the men who filled it. A recurring theme in Roman writings is this idea that human or institutional faults entitles no one to degrade the "dignity and authority" of a political office. Here and there some consul or praetor does something stupid, but offending the dignity of the office in response is regarded as the greater misdeed. I don't agree with the extreme rigidity with which the Romans harbored this attitude, but it was definitely one of the Romans' winning national traits. The belief in the dignity of political office kept the Romans a united and functional nation while other cultures around them (such as the Greeks and Carthaginians) went at it whenever some party wasn't happy.

(Actually, this was one of the major themes of my Capstone, which I'm fairly proud of).

This notion of the dignity of Roman magistrates was also a major reason - arguably the single most important reason - the Founding Fathers deliberately sought to create parallels between the ancient political system and our own.

I normally try to give everyone an ounce of respect for the simple fact that I don't know everyone; I don't know what they do with their free time, their views on different subjects, how they conduct themselves around others, if they're upstanding citizens, etc. I guess it's a 'benefit of the doubt' kinda thing. Once I start to learn about a person then they earn more or less respect based on what I know about them... I think we're all like this, right?

With that said, I wouldn't want to meet President Obama because he's not like everyone else. We know what he says, who he meets with, what he thinks, how he spends his/our money, what he eats for dinner, who he parties with, where he vacations, what he does to truly impact legislation and how he treats his own electorate and people from other countries. Most of what I know I don't like and because of what I know, my respect for him is lower than it was during his campaign. I don't think that make me a dickhole because I wouldn't want to give him the PR at my expense. We wouldn't get to talk about anything important and if we did, he wouldn't care what I had to say since he couldn't parade me around the SotU as some poster-child success for his programs. I also haven't attended one of his $34,000/plate dinners, donated to his campaign or supported many his policies. I have almost no common ground with the President and absolutely no interest to personally meet him.

Edit: Good laughs at the bolded parts in the quote.

The same would apply for Bush or anyone else. I have no interest in being around people I don't have respect for.

If you say so. I don't believe you'd decline to meet a GOP president.

I would. I haven't liked any of them either.

Bush may be likeable, but the only evidence i've seen of that was after his presidency was over, so it's a moot point.

Again, he deserves respect because he is the President. If the President personally invites you (or anyone personally invites you) for something, you go unless you have an emergency. And if you don't go because of said emergency, you don't make the fact that you didn't go a talking point on camera.

Why would you not respect someone? Unless they are a sociopath (no, Obama is not a sociopath just because you don't like his presidency) they deserve respect. Respect dictates that you attend the gathering unless you cannot. You can disagree with someone to the Nth degree and still respect them. In fact, you SHOULD. You and I are a perfect example - we disagree about almost everything politically, and I have never thought for a second that you didn't deserve my respect.

Must be a republican thing. /shrug

EDIT: the bold parts of that quote are my personal opinions, but how are they invalid enough to deserve "good laughs?" Can you actually refute them or are they funny because you disagree with them? Just curious.

I've been invited to shit I didn't go to because I had a personal beef with people. There's plenty of reasons to not go somewhere. There's NOT plenty of reasons to make a big deal about it, however.

I do the same thing. The key point here is that (presumably) you avoid hanging out with certain people because you don't like them as a person, at least that's what I do.

He can do whatever he wants, but the dude's still a dick.

I agree that he's being a dick, but only because he made a big deal about it.

If he just declined politely and then didn't make any comment other than "personal reasons," I'd be fine with it. Because really, that's all it is.

Isn't this like saying, "I do this, but doing this makes you a dick?" Not that there's anything wrong with that. Some of the best times I've ever had involved being a dick on purpose.
