Haha no I agree, he's a douche. I loved him when he was on the Eagles...I mean...so talented, so much swagger. But then his lockeroom cancer got in the way, and he burned all his bridges.

It's sad. If he wasn't such an ass, I'm sure he would have lasted with a team long enough to win a Superbowl. I'm convinced he would have a ring if the Eagles relationship hadn't soured.

The Eagles will never win.

If TO were to ever get his act together, the sensationalist media wouldn't let anyone hear of it. 'Star NFL WR out of work and penniless' makes for better headlines than highlighting anything he's done right. It's demoralizing. That's along the same lines as the point Aestu was making. He's disenfranchised with life, whether the anger and resentment is warranted or not, and he's decided it's easier and less emotionally risky to say 'fuck it all' than it is to continue trying.

Can't say I've never felt that way. I feel that way now.

I read the Wikipedia page. He seems really unstable - meeting him once probably isn't representative of the whole experience.

I'm not denying your impressions, mind you. He definitely seems capable of charm, wit, and creativity. He's ghetto trash and has serious emotional problems, but he's not stupid or humorless.



I think you mean to say he's disenchanted because he feels disenfranchised.

That is the essence of the ghetto culture. It is a response to the morally corrosive influence of racism.

Actually, no. I read the Autobiography of Malcolm X and Black Like Me, but that's all.

Most of my views on ghetto culture are shaped by reading about distant times and places and observing parallels in human development where race and contemporary culture were not factors. Ghetto trash aren't the only people in history to deal with the same fundamental issues in the same ways.

Ancient cultures believed that servility was morally corrosive. Cultures lacking strong authority and a moral center of gravity tend to develop a taste for gaudy self-adornment and an inability to articulate clearly. The ability to articulate and live in a civilized manner is inherently linked with self-respect and social stability. Ghetto trash aren't the only people to develop in this way - read about the degeneration of classical cultures, or about serfs during the Middle Ages, or Victorian paupers - the same issues appear.

Typically, the way these issues get resolved is when strong authority and a moral code is imposed either by a great leader or an external force.

Black Like Me is a terrible book. The author set out to portray a certain behavior and blatantly inflated events to suit his own narrative, often offering his slanted opinions as fact and giving what he decided was the opinions of those around him without ever actually talking to them about their take on the situation. If this is a book you are basing your opinions on, your opinions are wrong.

I agree it's terribly written and mostly rambling filler and self-serving BS. He doesn't even complete his supposed project before wimping out, which seems more a shill for his own laziness. The book still makes some incisive observations about social identity, how people form their own identity in response to how they are perceived by others.
