French Court Fines Google $660,000 Because Google Maps Is Free

Quote:
Google faces a $660,000 fine after a French court ruling that the company is abusing its dominant position in mapping by making Google Maps free.

According to The Economic Times, the French commercial court “upheld an unfair competition complaint lodged by Bottin Cartographes against Google France and its parent company Google Inc. for providing free web mapping services to some businesses.”

Seriously, what the hell?

Explain this:
1. As a Frenchman
2. As a man of the law

Unfair competition is an actual thing, but French law is civil law and not common law so I can't really make this any clearer.

Regardless of how the rules work, it's pretty shit. I took solace in a French court upholding a fraud conviction against the Church of Scientology.

I guess I thought when it came to any laws governing competition the end goal was to always protect consumers. IE: If Google was leveraging their powerful position in the market to charge consumers an excessive amount to use Google Maps, and push out any other competitors who might charge lower prices, THEN it makes sense to step in.

In this case this is something that clearly benefits consumers which is why I'm like WAT.

Ha I'll give the French courts a consolation point for that. I'm still waiting for the US to get their shit together and revoke Scientology's tax-exempt status.

I don't think any religions should be tax exempt.

Well, that's actually false, even here.

So you're saying consumers are fucked regardless? This is disappointing.
