Alcohol is a drug...and you say it's not comparable to hard drugs...fine, how does it compare to Weed, currently an illegal substance???
It's less dangerous. Apathy is an enormously socially destructive force.
1. You don't think alcoholics are apathetic?
2. The statistics of people who die from alcohol poisoning/alcohol-related automobile accidents versus the statistics of people who OD on weed would like a word with you
3. Have you ever seen people drunk? When was the last time you heard about a guy getting
high on weed and starting a fight?
Arguing that alcohol is less dangerous than marijuana is absurd. The fact is, you're okay with it because it's legal. Congrats, you're letting the government legislate your own morality.

Weed is addictive. Any argument to the contrary is pure propaganda. Anyone who knows a pothead, and I'm pretty sure everyone here does, knows firsthand what a lie that is.
There is a difference between physical addiction and mental addiction. Weed is not physically addicting. You experience no withdrawal symptoms of any kind if you go too long without it after continuous usage.
Mental addiction is completely different, and people can get mentally addicted to any number of things. Yes, you can be mentally addicted to pot (potheads), or exercise, or shopping, or WoW, and so on.

Chemical escapism is a social evil because it breeds apathy and undermines morality. People should not be allowed to escape from reality by popping pills because it disincentivizes changing it. That is a cost paid by everyone, not just the user.
What about the escapism that is video games/online gaming? Is that socially acceptable even though it has very clearly been proven to be a problem for many people?

What other programs and activities, specifically? Also, please provide actual numbers to back up this generalization.
