I don't think that Askray understand consideration, not that I'm sure it's relevant since it's contractual.

Simone, you should read the conclusions of the thread, at 1229 / 1235. Very interesting.

Read it.

W/e, I think you misunderstood me.

I've argued for the viability of BUY TO PLAY. Big difference from FREE TO PLAY.

Cryptic is also fucking awful, and they're going to ruin Neverwinter Nights.

Check out any FPS or CO-OP RPG (from the CoD series to Blizzard's BNet to TF2 to Mount and Blade). The vast majority are simply B2P - buy the box, play forever, with content updates that are optional on the side. It has worked, it continues to work, and as people realize that P2P MMOs/subscriptions are a scam, it will hopefully become the norm.

Not to mention that charging people for the box helps weed out some of the undesirables that lurk (somewhat rampantly), in the F2P market - granted, the whole FPS genre/community kinda defies all logic in this regard.

There's a large difference.

And I know how you like to pontificate about how it's not viable. Games that have gone from P2P to F2P have seen their revenue streams increase exponentially (check out the new L2 numbers!), and games like CoD have been able to churn out reliable expansions every couple years just charging for the box + meaningless extras. It works, and it will work for Guild Wars 2.

...doesn't CoD suck and largely appeal to ADHD kids?

I mean, once you're stuck with the box, what's the incentive for them to build on it?

What more needs to be said?

My point exactly. As soon as you buy the box, they have your money.

I'm sure there's a rule of acquisition that says something like "they always have more money." That's why they charge for DLCs for a lot of games. DCUOnline is F2P now, but they sell new powers as part of DLCs...and is actually making more money somehow.

DLCs were invented to get more money for the same games by cutting off the edges and selling them piecemeal.

I can't see how DLCs would work in a MMO, because all players would have to have the DLCs to interact with other players' itemization. If they worked like expansions do, then MMO DLCs would be hugely unbalancing. If they weren't hugely unbalancing, then the corp wouldn't be maximizing profit. This is precisely why all DLCs contain massive power increases, even in single-player games. Same with expansions in MMOs.
