Also, I've always wondered what's so bad about being completely and entirely wrong about global warming (even though we aren't). A lot of the changes on the table for climate change are things like getting off of fossil fuels and finding cleaner and cheaper ways of creating power and fuel. Even if climate change turned out to be a gigantic mistake after we completely kicked off of fossil fuels and coal, we'd be better for it as opposed to the status quo.
Newt Gingrich says we should be living on the moon. Think of it this way - If everyone were living on the moon then there wouldn't be far fewer emissions on Earth. So, why aren't we living on the moon!? Because we haven't figured out how to do it without completely retrofitting all of our civilization in a cost-effective manner.
Keep in mind, there's nothing stopping you from embarking to the moon on your own... just like there's nothing stopping you from reducing your carbon footprint to near nothing... except convenience, associated costs, knowledge needed to live off the grid completely, physical capability to pedal your ass around town on a bike, etc.
Until alternative power supplies are affordable and abundant enough, we're going to stick with fossil fuels. Truth is we don't have enough supply, or demand, to completely switch to alternative fuels without completely breaking the bank... or the hearts of environmentalists.
