In relationships/dating...there are all kinds of people. There are those who sleep with anything with a pulse. Those who will go on a bunch of dates, get some play, then abandon the whole thing when it gets "too serious." There are those who get into 1 serious relationship and basically become married....and then there are what I like to call "serial monogamists"

There's this one girl I know who used to date a buddy of mine. She was with him for a while, dumped him for this other guy...then dumped that guy for my friend, then dumped him for another guy. She is literally never without a boyfriend. As soon as one is dropped, another one is picked up.

I've observed this phenomenon with quite a few other people as well. The Facebook relationship status is an easy way to keep track of this. Some of these ladies are single and I start guessing how many weeks it will be before another guy is in the picture.

What's the deal with these people?
Do they even know how to be single?
Isn't it kind of unhealthy to never be without a significant other? I mean...isn't there something to be said about...idk, learning to be by yourself?
It's telling that with these types of people - their relationships never seem to work out.

It probably stems from fear of commitment coupled with fear of being alone. It's gotta be a bitch to go through for all parties involved.

Yeah I guess I should mention this girl that dated my buddy was bat-shit crazy. It was just shocking to see her drop and easily pick up guy after guy. Making them all depressed in the process...and it was such a cycle.... change relationship status, go on a long getaway trip, love love love, breakup, change status back, remove old couple photos...find the next guy.

Nah. It's not half that complicated, React.

They're just petty little hypocrites that want all the perks that come with monogamy without any of the commitment.

They want the freedom to make and break relationships based on petty self-interest and pure power-tripping, but then expect people to give them all the material and emotional support they could desire for however long the relationship lasts. And of course they want the right to cry bitterly and get all indignant should someone call them a whore.

It doesn't work out - they wind up only with people at their own emotional level. They think they're better than this, so they keep looking...and in the end, they are alone.

For some people (like me!) that's perfectly fine. But for these people...these are people who predicate every aspect of their existence - social, personal, financial, existential - on their relationships with other people.

Serial monogamy is a dead-end lifestyle for small and selfish people. It is really that simple.

Serial monogamy is fine, its the jumping from person to person like bees and flowers that leads to problems. well, is caused by problems that lead to more problems.

Where do you draw that line?

And what's the point of monogamy if it's serial?

I'm saying take time between relationships so you have time to move on from one before moving on to the next. which would be the bees and flowers metaphor that you missed.

"...take time so you have time..."

Why? What does that accomplish?

He's saying, take time to get over and out of the first relationship before jumping into another.

That happens as soon as one so decides. Like I said, it's willful self-delusion.

People who want to have all the benefits of monogamy, all the freedom of polygamy, act out of total self-indulgence, and resent being called whores.

So they go through all kinds of nonsense to pretend they aren't what they are.

I know what you're saying but you have to understand there is some gray area. It's not all black and white. Typically, people make that choice because they met someone else. Then there are people who have to make that choice because it is the most logical in the long term, despite not wanting to have to make that choice. They do it because they have to. At which point do you still argue that time is unneeded?

In each of the examples you cite, "time" still merely serves as a pretense - a means of masking one's actual selfish intentions.

So is it selfish that I didn't want to get a new dog the same day mine died? I mean, I had to choose to put him to sleep. So by your logic, I'm masking my selfish intentions of secretly wanting another dog. Of course, you're right. I shouldn't be sad or upset that he's dead and want to take some time before I get a new one if at all. Shame on me. ;]
