Having some basic knowledge or training helps, but my roommate loaned me a study guide for Security+. I also have a guide for RHEL 6. Since I'm playing with the stuff every day now, between the guides and what I can reference off the web, I've gotten a lot better. I'll probably get better with the RHEL 6 once I get my employee server. I have a virtual machine running on one of the servers here at the house, but I haven't had much time to try anything on it.
So... Get some study guides, reference what you don't know/understand from the internet, and set a server up on old machine so you can apply your knowledge.
