To be fair, Vanilla launched without BGs.

In this case though it's obviously Cata all over again: a skeleton dev team, rushing the product out the door, to meet an artificial deadline set by the same guys upstairs that cut their staff.

And it will probably turn out the same way. Gaudy, disjointed, shallow Activision cash farm.

I remain convinced this RMAH bullshit is going to turn out horribly. More horribly than anyone imagines. Like Weimar inflation, currency soft resets every three weeks and people getting shot irl horrible.

Is this really so bad? It looks similar to how they handled the release of WoW.

Yes, but WoW wasn't being mismanaged by Activision nor compelled to meet artificial deadlines.

Also, D2 had no PvP outside everyone toggling and fighting in amusing but disorganized fashion outside Rogue Encampment, and it still had eleventy billion players.

It sounds like apologism, but the fact is that Diablo's always been about murdering mobs. I'll enjoy their "arenas" when they're added, but I'm content to play the actual game first.

You can't compare current releases to past games, consumer's expectations have changed.

Pac-man was a smash hit, that doesn't mean it's good enough to be a blockbuster this summer.

Releasing an unfinished game is unfortunately the norm, not the exception anymore.

But consumer's expectations should always have been about playing Diablo, not about playing the arenas that have been cited specifically by Blues as fun-but-probably-unbalanced.

I think this reflects the entire change in philosophy Blizzard has had ever since the Activision take over. Once they became about the bottom line, and less about the games...the quality has suffered.

Remember when they weren't happy with the direction of Warcraft III? They were willing to push things back and start over in order to get the game just right.

I honestly respected that about them - as a consumer it was frustrating at times, but I always had faith the product would be as good as it could possibly be. I know they've pushed Diablo 3 back too...but it seems they're simply more willing to cave into pressure nowadays.

Get it right, don't just scrap ideas because they will take a little more effort to implement.

Oh well, I agree with Tuhl in that the game was never primarily a PvP thing - and so it will still probably be very good. Just disappointing to see them give up because of $$$$$

I respect that about companies as well Azelma. Yeah it's frustrating, but you know it will be worth it despite being frustrated.

Sometimes now it seems like the pushing back is less about quality of the product and more about milking existing products and generating hype through suspense.

I'm with Tuhl. The game is about teaming with your buddies and slashing through hordes of baddies... and the Arena feature will come in time so no big deal.

I'm not so sure. More and more people are just sitting out. More and more are saying, "I'm not going to give this 'new' product the benefit of the doubt".

It could happen again.
